Sync or Swing: The Phase-Lag Kuramoto Playground
A live RK4 simulation of the second-order (inertial) Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model — a ring of
64 oscillators colored by phase, sliders for coupling K, inertia m, and phase lag α, and a live
order-parameter r(t) chart. The counterintuitive result made visceral: at α=0 the two frequency clusters
never lock (r thrashes ~0.5-0.7), but dragging α up to the marked "sweet spot" ≈0.25 rad pushes the whole
ring into a locked, single-hue synchronized state (r → 0.96) — the opposite of what plain first-order
Kuramoto intuition predicts. Includes a K-sweep hysteresis mode that traces the up/down bistability loop.
Grounded in arXiv:2606.07002, "Phase lag enhances synchronization in coupled oscillators with
inertia." Won a 3-way build-off judged on wow-factor, interactivity, polish, and fidelity to the paper's
actual math — the judge singled it out because the interaction loop is the paper's headline result,
reproduced quantitatively in real time rather than just gestured at.
Projects
- Prop Fan Charts: generative predictive distributions for NBA player props — swaps the point forecast + hand-fit variance in the existing rebounds/threes props pipeline for a lightweight generative model (diffusion or normalizing-flow head) over each stat's rolling game-log history, rendering full calibrated "fan chart" predictive distributions per prop line and computing edge directly as P(over) vs. the book's implied probability, backtested via PIT histograms/CRPS (arXiv:2606.16773).
Startups
- Attribution Copilot — GPT-Powered Performance Attribution as a Service — a SaaS for solo RIAs and small asset managers: plug in portfolio + benchmark holdings, get back a real Brinson-Fachler allocation/ selection decomposition plus an LLM-narrated, client-ready quarterly commentary with a defensible audit trail of the underlying math, undercutting both a human analyst and a Bloomberg/FactSet module (arXiv:2403.10482).

- The Metric That Catches Fake Long-Term Wins — an explainer on the Proximal Surrogate Index: why short-term surrogate metrics (clicks today, standing in for revenue in 5 years) can be badly biased by unobserved confounding, and how plugging in two proxies — a negative-control outcome and a negative-control action — recovers the true long-term causal effect without waiting years, framed as the "grown-up" version of the surrogate-index trick Netflix/Google already use (arXiv:2601.17712).
Runner-up demos
- Arithmetic Random Waves — pick an eigenvalue λ and watch the standing-wave pattern of a random toral eigenfunction render live, built from every lattice point with n₁²+n₂²=λ; the sum-of-two-squares count r₂(λ) spikes for "friendly" λ and flatlines to an empty wave whenever λ carries a prime ≡3 mod 4 to an odd power — real number theory made visible as a Chladni-plate toy (arXiv:2606.08650).
- The Dream Machine — a real Hopfield network you teach by drawing patterns, run side-by-side with a "dreaming" twin that gets noise-seeded sleep-replay cycles between lessons; corrupt a taught pattern and watch the no-dream network catastrophically forget while the dreaming network holds on (arXiv:2602.04095).
