The Optimist's Gradient
After a catastrophe wipes out a population's fitness niche, mean fitness doesn't snap back —
it recovers as a 1/t power law, with the prefactor set by how many traits are still misaligned with
the new environment. Hit METEOR and watch a procedurally-generated fitness landscape detonate under a
population of dots, then race two recovery strategies live: a greedy gradient-ascent population that freezes
on the very first local peak it touches, against a trust-region "optimistic" population that samples broadly
before committing and finds a genuinely better peak. A live log-log chart plots each population's fitness
deficit against a derived 1/t reference line — the discrete step-downs as the optimistic population discovers
successively better peaks are real simulation output, not scripted. Grounded in arXiv:2606.09040,
"Natural Selection in the Wake of Catastrophe." Won a 3-way build-off judged on wow-factor, interactivity,
polish, and fidelity — the judge called it the only one of the three with a live event and a competitive
narrative, rather than a slider-morphed or static plot.
Projects
- PlayPrint: Canonical-Hypergraph Fingerprints for NBA Actions — a basketball possession-action (pick-and-roll, hand-off into a flare screen) is naturally a hypergraph over the players/roles involved; a simplified version of a hypergraph-canonicalization algorithm turns any possession into a canonical fingerprint string independent of which players fill which role, letting you mine a season of play data for structurally identical actions across different teams and lineups with zero manual play-tagging (arXiv:2607.10194).
Startups
- Patent Cliff Radar — watches patents heading for expiry via the free PatentsView API and auto-generates a one-page "commercialization packet" per patent (which of seven pathway types it fits — SaaS, licensing, consulting, data product — plus a market-size gut-check and first customers to cold-email), an AI-generated-go-to-market layer no existing patent-search tool offers (arXiv:2607.10179).
YouTube
- I Fed 5 Years of Travel Data Into a Physics Model and Found a Secret Symmetry — opens with the intuitive puzzle of whether flows between places balance out, explains "detailed balance" via coin-flip intuition, then screen-records a live slider dragging short-term chaotic flows into a mirror-symmetric network as the observation window widens — closing on the few flows that structurally never balance, like a one-way brain drain (arXiv:2603.21552).
Runner-up demos
- Adversary Slider — live side-by-side OLS vs. robust trimmed-least-squares regression fits over a scatter cloud, with sliders for corruption fraction, sample count, and condition number; drag corruption up and watch OLS's line get torqued by adversarial outliers while the robust fit barely moves (arXiv:2605.18042).
- The Reversibility Slider — a basketball half-court zone network where directional flow arrows relax toward symmetry as you drag a temporal coarse-graining slider from single-possession to full-season, except for a few hand-picked "persistent drift" edges (like the rim) that never balance and one edge that visibly flips partway through (arXiv:2603.21552).
