A prestressed elastic shell shaped on a minimal surface (think a saddle, a Pringle chip) has a
continuum of geometric zero modes — deformation paths that cost almost zero elastic energy because the
shell can glide between isometric ground states of the surface. Push it any other way and the energy well is
steep. Drag the saddle mesh sideways and it glides freely and holds wherever you leave it; drag it up or down
instead and it resists hard, then snaps back with damped oscillation. A live energy-vs-displacement gauge plots
both wells side by side — nearly flat for the soft direction, steep for the stiff one — and two "tap to excite"
buttons fire an identical tiny impulse into each: the soft mode resonates into a large sustained glide, the
stiff mode barely trembles. Grounded in arXiv:2605.09289, "Dynamical geometric modes in non-Euclidean
plates." Won a 3-way build-off judged on wow-factor, interactivity, polish, and fidelity — the judge called it
the only one of the three where the paper's specific quantitative claim was directly, measurably reproduced
through interaction rather than just illustrated.
Startups
- EnsembleGuard: Pay-for-Diversity Model Router — middleware for teams running multi-model LLM ensembles (GPT + Claude + Gemini fan-out for high-stakes answers) that scores live agreement data with the paper's diversity metric and only pays for extra model calls when the predicted lift is actually positive — down-routing to a single model when disagreement patterns are too correlated to help, up-routing only when they predict real gains (arXiv:2607.17384).

- The Genus-2 Donut That Refuses to Bend — builds rigidity intuition through familiar cases (frameworks in the plane, on a sphere, on a torus) before landing on the paper's actual open case: genus-≥2 surfaces, where unrolling into the hyperbolic universal cover turns one framework into an Escher-like Circle Limit tiling — rigidity as an emergent property of infinite symmetry, not local bracing (arXiv:2607.05023).
Projects
- No strong project-shaped idea surfaced tonight — this batch skewed toward physics/math/econ papers whose best angle was an explorable demo or a narrow startup wedge rather than a repo-sized tool.
Runner-up demos
- Rescue vs. Damage — build a virtual LLM ensemble by hand: drag per-model accuracy sliders and a correctness-correlation knob, and watch a live 20,000-trial Monte Carlo simulation decompose ensemble lift into green "rescue mass" and red "damage mass" on an animated waterfall chart. Crank correlation up into "echo chamber" territory and net lift flips negative — decorrelated errors, not just more models, are what ensembles actually buy you (arXiv:2607.17384).
- Newtonianization Chamber — a Herschel-Bulkley fluid flows through a channel with a thin lubricating film at the wall; sliders for yield stress, shear-thinning, and thixotropic memory bend a live flow-rate-vs- pressure curve into a hysteresis loop, while growing the lubrication film straightens it back into a Newtonian line — the bulk fluid never changes, only what the wall lets you see (arXiv:2605.09172).
