Invading Fronts Rescue a Doomed Population
Two identical stochastic rock-paper-scissors ecosystems run side by side on live canvas grids, each
split into a tiny "vulnerable" patch and a much larger "refuge." One patch stays walled off forever; the other's
border can be opened with a toggle. Same demographic noise, same patch size, same rules — the only difference is
whether reinforcements can leak across the border from the refuge's traveling activity front. Watch the running
extinction tally: isolated converges to 100% extinct, refuge-connected drops to roughly a quarter of that,
live, with population sparklines and a scrolling trial-outcome history for both. No fitness bonus, no rule
change — just an open door. Grounded in arXiv:2511.10807, "Invading activity fronts stabilize excitable
systems against stochastic extinction." Won a 3-way build-off (scored 9/8/9/10 on wow/interactivity/polish/
fidelity, tied on raw score with a branching-random-walk "big jump" demo but won on instant legibility) — the
judge called it "whoa within seconds, understood by anyone," beating out a fat-tailed record-breaking random walk
and a nonreciprocal Kuramoto oscillator sync/chase playground.
Projects
- Momentum Landscapes: Waddington-Style Attractor Modeling for NBA Win Probability — treats an NBA game's win-probability trajectory as a particle rolling in a reshaping potential well fit live from play-by-play data (same inverse-problem math family as the paper's gene-expression landscape reshaping): a scoring run deepens the well around one team, a drought splits it into a bimodal "anyone's game" landscape — a live-betting signal distinct from a plain win-prob line since well depth also encodes how easily the game state could flip (arXiv:2605.14562).
Startups
- SteamCatcher: Toxic Flow Detection for Sportsbook Bet Ingestion — ports PULSE, an online Bayesian last-layer network built for FX brokers to score incoming trades' "toxicity" in sub-millisecond real time, onto bet flow (size, timing vs. line open, book-specific velocity, bettor-level historical CLV) — sold either as a risk-management feed for regional books or flipped inward to front-run CLV by detecting when the market is absorbing sharp flow before the line moves (arXiv:2312.05827).
YouTube
- I Ran a Dark-Matter Detector for Proteins on My Laptop — LA4SR repurposes tiny open language models (as small as 70M params) to classify the ~65% of microbial/algal "dark proteome" nobody has characterized, hitting F1 up to 95 while running 16,580x faster than BLASTP. Video hook: race a small open checkpoint against a simulated BLASTP search live on camera using real uncharacterized UniProt sequences, then zoom into the model's explainability heatmap to show which amino acid motifs it noticed (arXiv:2411.06798).
Runner-up demos
- The Fat-Tailed Frontier — simulates a subcritical branching random walk with a stretched-exponential step tail live, running millions of trees to extinction; every new record maximum triggers a trace back through the tree highlighting the single outlier step that caused it, next to a live overlay of the empirical vs. theoretical survival function — the paper's "big-jump principle" made visible: records are won on one lottery-ticket step, not gradual accumulation (arXiv:2606.28631).
- Sync or Chase: Nonreciprocal Kuramoto Playground — a ring of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi oscillators, phase color-coded, that snaps from a locked pulse to a shimmering desynchronized "chase" as a phase-lag slider crosses a critical threshold that itself falls as the interaction range widens — the paper's renormalization-group result on nonreciprocal criticality, felt instead of read (arXiv:2606.16427).
