Cutoff: The Shuffle That Suddenly Mixes
300 simulated decks run a real top-m-to-random shuffle live β pop the top m cards as
a block, reinsert at a uniform random gap, repeat. A live distance-to-random chart stays pinned near 1.0 for a
long stretch, doing seemingly nothing, then collapses off a cliff right where the closed-form theory curve
(plotted as a dashed overlay, not faked) predicts it will. Drag deck size and block size and watch the collapse
window visibly sharpen as the deck grows β the paper's cutoff phenomenon, felt instead of read. One hero deck
animates on canvas with a "dealer verdict" readout (still ordered / mixing / actually random) for anyone who's
ever wondered how many riffles it actually takes. Grounded in arXiv:2606.29530, "Cutoff profiles for
colored top-m-to-random shuffles with growing block size." Won a 3-way build-off (scored 36/40 on
wow/interactivity/polish/fidelity) β the judge called out its theory overlay as an exact match to the paper's
closed-form separation-distance formula, not an approximation, and its zero external dependencies as the most
robust of the three builds. Beat an agent-safety "self-verdict vs. external oracle" progress-mirage simulator
(34.5) and a random-recursive-tree "find patient zero" guessing game (33.5).
Projects
- Ground Truth Gate: Externally-Grounded Verification for Agent Loops β a drop-in wrapper for long-running Claude Code / cron agents (this very nightly repo included) that replaces self-verdict gating with an isolated world-state oracle check β did tests actually pass, did the diff actually apply, did the metric actually move. The source paper found self-verdict loops claim improvement every single cycle while 56% of cycles have zero-or-negative real delta, eroding best-deployed-state by 19%, and even a strong in-band judge reading the full diff still accepts 44% of regressions; a sign-only external gate recovers near-baseline real output (arXiv:2607.25152).
Startups
- LLM VIX: A Volatility Index for Production LLM APIs β continuously fires a fixed prompt battery at GPT/Claude/Gemini/Llama endpoints, measures semantic drift (embedding cosine variance), format volatility (JSON-schema break rate), and refusal-rate variance, and publishes a daily VIX-style number per model β plus a paid dashboard that alerts teams when a provider silently updates a model and output distributions shift underneath their product. Implied-vol infrastructure for the token economy (arXiv:2311.15180).
YouTube
- I Simulated 10,000 Quantum Trajectories Until They Forgot Each Other β a visual explainer of propagation of chaos for Belavkin equations (continuous quantum measurement/filtering), using the classical McKean-Vlasov intuition as a bridge: a live particle-swarm animation where each dot's "belief state" about a hidden variable decorrelates as swarm size grows, next to a running correlation coefficient crashing to zero. Whimsy outro hook: same math as why a poker table's players' beliefs about a shared hidden card become statistically independent as the table gets big β propagation of chaos as "why crowds stop reading each other's minds" (arXiv:2606.29557).
Runner-up demos
- Progress Mirage Simulator β toggles the same noisy agent-cycle simulator between a Self-Verdict narrator (claims progress every cycle, no matter what) and an External Oracle (only reports the true delta and gates on it), racing two live charts β Claimed Progress vs. Real-World Delta β that dramatize the same externally-grounded-verification paper as tonight's top project pick, made viscerally felt in under a minute of play (arXiv:2607.25152).
- Patient Zero: Find the Root of a Random Recursive Tree β grows a random recursive tree node-by-node, hides the arrival order, and asks you to click-guess which node was born first before revealing the answer via the paper's actual method β iterated Jordan-centrality peeling β heat-mapping every node by estimated arrival rank and scoring the algorithm vs. your gut guess vs. ground truth with a live Spearman/Kendall-tau readout (arXiv:2606.24465).
