Permutation Snap — watch gradient ascent find the only maxima
The paper proves that maximizing the entrywise l4 norm (Σqᵢⱼ⁴) over the orthogonal group has signed
permutation matrices as its only local — hence global — maximizers, and every other stationary point comes
with an explicit escape direction with strictly positive second variation. This demo plots the SO(2) objective
f(θ)=1.5+0.5cos(4θ) live as you rotate a matrix, animates gradient ascent snapping a random rotation toward a
permutation matrix, and has a bonus panel that runs the exact same ascent on two blindly-mixed sine tones —
letting you literally hear the mix un-scramble into two clean notes as the rotation converges, which is the real
reason this theorem matters (why ICA optimization landscapes have no bad local optima). Grounded in
arXiv:2607.12431. Won a 2-way build-off (36/40 vs 32/40 — the third builder never completed a file) on
verbatim-accurate math and the audio "un-scrambling" panel as the standout wow-factor.
Startups
- ESG Weight Reveal — Refinitiv's overall ESG score folds 10 category sub-scores (emissions, workforce, human rights, shareholders, etc.) into one number via a fixed weighting scheme the paper questions as an arbitrary policy choice dressed up as measurement. An interactive leaderboard where dragging a category weight reshuffles company rankings live turns that critique into something you can feel, and doubles as a due-diligence tool for stress-testing a target's ESG rating under alternative weighting schemes before trusting it in a screen (arXiv:2312.00202).

- The Orchids That Are Winning Right Now — And Losing By 2070 — species distribution models projecting climate + land-use change to 2050/2070 show orchid richness collapsing across most of Great Britain and Ireland, including species that are currently gaining ground on naive historical trend counts. Video hook: the flowers doing best today are the ones the models say are already doomed — walk through why SDMs diverge from simple trend extrapolation, then animate a toy range contracting on a stylized UK/Ireland grid as a warming slider climbs (arXiv:2511.01122).
Projects
- Ground-Truth-Free HTR Scorer — the paper's real contribution is methodological: estimate handwriting/OCR recognition accuracy from the agreement rate between two independent transcriptions of the same page, instead of requiring an expensive gold-standard transcript (validated to within 1 percentage point, 0.92 rank-correlation to true accuracy across 294 real manuscript pairs). A small reusable CLI — feed it two transcript files of the same document, get back an accuracy estimate plus confidence interval — is exactly what archives and digitization projects need and usually can't afford (arXiv:2608.03617).
Runner-up demo
- Numerical Semigroup Tree Explorer — an exact multiparameter formula (genus, Frobenius number, and multiplicity simultaneously) for counting numerical semigroups, framed as the Chicken McNugget problem with a live branching tree and a running counter that verifies the theorem node-by-node. Lost narrowly (32/40) after the judge caught one stated inequality that didn't match the paper's abstract (arXiv:2607.23111).
