Interpolation Roulette โ spin the wheel on a fragile model
The paper proves that in high dimensions, ridgeless (min-norm interpolating) regression is accurate
on average but has a heavy right tail of catastrophic prediction errors that decays only polynomially, while
ridge-regularized regression's tail decays far faster โ interpolators look fine most of the time but are
statistically fragile in the tail. This demo fits both a ridge model and a ridgeless model live, in-browser, on
synthetic heavy-tailed high-dimensional data, and animates every held-out trial as a spin landing on a
live-updating error histogram for each model side by side: ridge trials cluster tight and boring, ridgeless
trials look similar most of the time โ until one lands on a huge spike. A slider for the dimension/sample-size
ratio dials the fragility up live. Grounded in arXiv:2607.09547. Won a 3-way build-off (36/40, vs 34 and
33 for the runners-up) โ the judge called it the most technically ambitious build, actually fitting both
regressions in-browser rather than animating canned data, with fidelity down to quoting the paper's exact
nยฒ vs nยทlog n tail-decay rates.
Startups
- TubeAlpha โ Fintuber Sentiment-Divergence Signal โ the paper finds real alpha in a Korean financial YouTube channel: positively-mentioned stocks pump then crash pre-announcement, negatively-mentioned stocks underreact and drift down after, and โ the interesting part โ shifts in a channel's tone relative to its own historical baseline forecast market returns, surviving controls for news sentiment, rates, and liquidity risk. Pitched as a transcript-scraping + LLM-sentiment pipeline that computes each fintuber's baseline-deviation signal, shipped first as a research dashboard then a paid feed for quant/retail traders following Korean (and eventually US) financial YouTubers โ a source nobody is systematically quantifying yet (arXiv:2311.15247).

- SFT vs. RL: The Multi-Task Tug of War โ the paper's surprising result: plain supervised fine-tuning on multiple tasks causes severe interference because updates are norm-limited (big weight-magnitude conflicts that overwrite each other), while RL fine-tuning naturally produces sparse, near-orthogonal per-task updates that coexist without stepping on each other, motivating the paper's proposed "Parallel-RL" paradigm. Video hook: animate two toy 2D gradient fields side by side โ SFT's thick overlapping arrows canceling out vs RL's thin, near-perpendicular arrows โ to build intuition for "why does my multi-task fine-tune get worse the more tasks I add" (arXiv:2608.03573).
Projects
- Risk-Controlled Sentinel โ the paper's unglamorous but useful finding: a dead-simple monitor โ threshold a scalar score from an external judge model, calibrate the threshold with conformal/risk-control guarantees โ matches fancier sequential-hypothesis-testing monitors on math-reasoning and red-teaming benchmarks. A lightweight middleware library that sits between an app and any LLM API, scores each response, maintains a calibration set, and provably bounds the missed-unsafe rate at a chosen risk level โ a direct low-effort upgrade path for exactly the kind of error-forwarding plumbing this project's own bot infrastructure already has (arXiv:2607.02510).
Runner-up demos
- Broken Gate: Spot the Agent โ six procedurally-animated cursor traces (jittery-human vs bezier-smooth-bot) to classify before a timer runs out, then a "behind the curtain" reveal shows the headless/WebDriver/TLS-fingerprint signals that actually determine a real CAPTCHA's verdict โ dramatizing the paper's finding that challenge-based bot defenses key off environment authenticity, not behavior, and that near-identical behavioral footprints can yield divergent pass/block outcomes. Scored 34/40 (arXiv:2607.18659).
- Brownian Bridge Box Score โ a privacy-noised running basketball box score races two panels answering "what was the cumulative total at query time X": a naive tree mechanism that visibly walks O(log T) binary-tree nodes, against a Brownian-bridge mechanism that instantly interpolates the same correctly-correlated noise value โ making the paper's O(log T)-vs-constant-time claim about privately releasing continual-observation sums race-able. Scored 33/40 (arXiv:2606.11760).
