Defect Drift Playground โ spiral waves crawl into fiber waves
The paper shows that in pulsating (oscillating, non-self-propelled) active matter, mechanochemical
coupling between local pulsation and repulsion breaks spatial/time-reversal symmetry โ topological defects that
would otherwise sit pinned at a spiral's core start to drift, and past a crossover the wave pattern
morphs from smooth spirals into thin, fast-moving fiber-like fronts. This demo runs an actual live
FitzHugh-Nagumo reaction-diffusion PDE on canvas โ not a scripted animation โ seeded with a rotating defect.
Drag the asymmetry slider and watch the defect core detach from its pinned center and crawl across the grid,
leaving a drift trail, while the wave front thins from a spiral into fiber-like filaments; click anywhere to
reseed a new defect. Framed with the paper's own cardiac-arrhythmia hook for why a drifting defect matters.
Grounded in arXiv:2605.25996. Won a 3-way build-off (34/40, vs 31 and 31 for the runners-up) โ the judge
called it out as the only entry that's an actual live PDE solver rather than a stat-shuffling toy, producing a
visually dramatic, physically-motivated transformation that directly demonstrates the paper's ratchet/
symmetry-breaking claim.
Startups
- One-Shot Directed Evolution Copilot โ ProteinGuide's result: a single forward pass through a guided generative model proposes protein variants competitive with iterative directed-evolution rounds, with a natural-language front end (DNAHLM) for specifying the desired property in plain English instead of a wet-lab loop. Packaged as a copilot that takes "make this enzyme more thermostable" and returns ranked variant sequences (arXiv:2505.04823, front end arXiv:2410.16917).

- Time Has a Measurable 'Arrow' โ The Physics of Imaginary Entropy โ the paper shows imaginary pseudo-entropy encodes temporal orientation, i.e. a quantum-information quantity that literally points which way time flows in a given state. A physics-explainer hook: build up to "here's a number in your equations that knows the difference between past and future" (arXiv:2606.29235).
Projects
- Fail-Closed Memory: a governed, source-bound memory layer for your own agents โ the paper formalizes "governed persistent memory": every stored memory is source-bound (tagged with provenance) and the system fails closed (refuses to release/act on a memory) rather than failing open when provenance can't be verified โ a drop-in memory layer for long-horizon agents that need an audit trail instead of a silent vector store (arXiv:2608.12476).
Runner-up demos
- Prompt-Poison Playground: gaming an AI shopping recommender โ a drag-and-drop toy that recreates SIREN's finding that editing the content of one already-retrieved page โ while holding the rest of a RAG context fixed โ can flip an LLM recommender's #1 pick, with declarative/seeded-list framings beating directive injections. A live-reranking leaderboard reacts as you insert the paper's real technique categories (23 techniques, 62/124 reproducing at rank 1, 0.805 mean rate across 2 production Claude models). Scored 31/40 (arXiv:2607.21951).
- Trend-Tide: Watch Mean-Reversion Go Extinct โ a 10,000-agent, 5-archetype market simulation recreating the paper's evolutionary-proof result: under frictionless, UBI-style conditions, trend-following wealth share climbs toward saturation while mean-reversion wealth collapses toward zero over simulated years, with a friction toggle that partially reverses it. Scored 31/40 (arXiv:2603.29593).
