Wire-Plane Sketchpad โ draw a curve, feel the two-thirds power law
The paper argues the famous "two-thirds power law" of human movement โ hand speed scales
as curvature-1/3, the reason your pen slows through tight loops and speeds through gentle arcs โ
is a fully covariant 3-tensor invariant, not an artifact of any one coordinate system: it should survive
any smooth deformation of the drawing plane. This demo lets you draw any curve freehand, then races
a power-law-speed dot against a constant-speed control dot along it โ the power-law dot visibly matches
natural handwriting rhythm. The killer feature is Warp mode: drag six control handles to smoothly bend the
entire canvas (a real diffeomorphism), and the power-law dot's slow/fast rhythm is recomputed from scratch
under the warped geometry and survives almost unchanged (99%+ correlation after a gentle warp) โ a direct,
feelable demonstration of the paper's covariance claim. Grounded in arXiv:2603.03337 ("Does the motor
cortex draw on a wire plane?"). Won a 3-way build-off โ the judge called it "the most novel, personal, and
immediately delightful interaction of the set," edging out a chiral-active-matter wall-accumulation sim and
an urban-scaling statistical-illusion dashboard, both close runners-up below.
Startups
- Ratchet Memory โ heat-driven bits that hold themselves โ the paper proves any local active dynamics can be physically realized by a many-body Brownian ratchet (a static energy landscape plus a hot/cold heat current, no controller needed), and gives a concrete Ising-ratchet memory bit that resists decay in regimes where the equivalent equilibrium system forgets almost instantly. Pitch: ultra-low-power state retention for edge/IoT and neuromorphic hardware, stabilized purely by an ambient heat gradient instead of active refresh/error-correction circuitry (arXiv:2607.01231).
Projects
- Bipartite Cholesky ERI Toolkit โ package the paper's bipartite GNN (orbital nodes vs. auxiliary Cholesky-factor nodes from density-fitted electron-repulsion integrals, cutting complexity from O(Nโด) to O(Nยณ)) as an open-source PySCF + PyTorch-Geometric plugin: feed it mean-field HF/DFT output, get a learned correlation-energy correction toward FCI quality in one forward pass, with an explicit "how similar is this molecule to my training set" confidence score shipped as a feature, not hidden as a caveat (arXiv:2605.25268).
YouTube
- The Autonomous AI That Proved a 17-Year-Old Number Theory Conjecture โ x_n = tan(arctan 1 + arctan 2 + โฆ + arctan n) is the slope after n compounding rotations; a 2008 conjecture said it's never an integer past n=5, and this paper proves that whenever it IS an integer, |x_n| must exceed a doubly-exponential bound โ closing the conjecture on a density-one set, with the proof formalized in Lean/Mathlib and generated autonomously by an AI theorem-prover (arXiv:2607.05739).
- The 15-Minute City Is Lying to You About Transit โ punctures the Instagram-friendly "15-minute city" map trope with the paper's actual nuance: high-speed rail to peripheral neighborhoods boosts social mixing but doesn't meaningfully improve access to daily services โ you need polycentric transit networks plus active-mobility support, not just more rail (arXiv:2604.00699).
Runner-up demos
- Curvature Trap: Chiral Particles vs. the Wall โ ~380 spinning point particles in a superellipse container whose "curvature" slider morphs continuously from a flat-walled box to a true circle; non-motile but chiral particles stay uniformly distributed against straight walls but pile up (verified ~2.2ร density) the instant confinement curves, purely from chirality-induced wall currents, not any self-propulsion. Judge called it the tightest fidelity of the three, with the physics independently verified at steady state (arXiv:2607.01948).
- The City Growth Illusion โ spawns a few hundred synthetic cities that all obey the exact same simple growth rule, staggers their founding dates and growth rates, then fits a live log-log regression across a cross-sectional snapshot โ and a convincing "superlinear" or "sublinear" urban-scaling exponent pops out even though zero nonlinearity was coded into any individual city, exactly the statistical-artifact argument the paper makes about famous urban-scaling laws (arXiv:2603.30021).
