Nightly session brief β Bankroll Truth Serum (Aug 30)
TL;DR
Ran the full arxiv-scrape nightly playbook autonomously, start to finish, no
recovery needed. Fetched 176 fresh papers, ideated 24 ideas, ran a genuine 3-way
build-off with headless-browser verification on all three demos, and shipped the
winner β Bankroll Truth Serum, a live utility-based-acceptability-index
leaderboard β to share.djiang.xyz.
What I was asked to do
Execute the arxiv-scrape nightly scout playbook: fetch fresh papers, ideate
project/startup/youtube/demo ideas, pick a forum top-3 (with at least one
buildable-tonight demo), run a 3-way build-off + judge, publish the winner to
share.djiang.xyz via the manifest-driven site, and log the run.
What I attempted
1. Fetch: python3 fetch_papers.py 8 726 papers_nightly.json (day-of-year
242 Γ 3). First attempt timed out at the 2-minute default; reran with a longer
timeout and it completed cleanly β 176 papers across 22 categories.
2. Sample + dedup: sampled 30 fresh papers, explicitly excluding every arXiv
ID that appeared in the last 4 nights' ideation runs (94 IDs checked) β 0
overlap in the final sample.
3. Ideation: ran a 6-batch parallel Workflow scoring each idea on
cool/buildable/discussion. votes.json (forum vote signal) is still all-zero
after a week of voting, so no tag bias was applied this run.
4. Forum top-3 selection: six ideas tied at discussion=9. Filtered to the
three highest on coolΓbuildable that were also demo-type (the two startup
ideas tied at 9 β Pareto Edge Engine, SplitWatch β scored low on buildable-
tonight and were passed over for the build-off, but kept in the brief).
5. Build-off: spawned three independent builder subagents in parallel, one
per paper, each producing a single self-contained HTML demo with CDN libs
allowed. All three finished and each ran its own verification pass (Playwright
or Puppeteer headless-browser checks) β and each caught and fixed a real bug
during that verification (see below).
6. Judge: one subagent scored all three on wow/interactivity/polish/fidelity.
What succeeded
papers_nightly.json (176 papers), ideation_2026-08-30_results.json(24 ideas), committed to the arxiv-scrape repo.
validate_digest.py) forSage's forum posting step β 3 papers, all required fields, demo fields pointing
at the build-off winner.
- A β Order Flow Whisperer (arXiv:2307.15599): a market maker quotes
bid/ask depth against a jump-diffusion price; an "informedness" slider
controls prediction accuracy on the next jump, and that informed skew *is*
the order-book imbalance. Playwright confirmed RΒ² climbs from ~0.02β0.07
(noise) at informedness 0 to 0.38β0.82 at informedness 1. Caught a real bug:
the "wrong guess" fallback matched the true jump direction by chance 50% of
the time, inflating the noise floor β fixed with a forced sign-flip.
- B β Predictable, You Are Not (arXiv:2607.20818): three sequential-
sampling rules (i.i.d., naive greedy, self-balancing) race side by side on a
configurable K-sided die, each tracking convergence speed and a live
"guess-the-due-option" predictability exploit. Playwright-verified across
every control with zero console errors; confirmed self-balancing matches
greedy's convergence speed while staying near i.i.d.'s predictability floor.
- C β Bankroll Truth Serum (arXiv:2310.02014) β the winner: four
illustrative return streams (steady, high-vol, fat-tail, moderate) plotted as
live bankroll paths; a CRRA risk-aversion slider recomputes real
certainty-equivalent growth rates and re-ranks an animated leaderboard live.
At Ξ³=0 the high-variance strategy is #1 on raw EV; by Ξ³=10 it's dead last
with a negative CE. Puppeteer-verified, including a real mobile
responsive-layout bug (leaderboard clipping at 420px) caught and fixed.
C won the tie-break β "the interaction directly *is* the paper's result": one
slider drag visibly reorders four strategies via a correct closed-form CRRA
calculation, versus B's more abstract dual-chart tradeoff that needs two charts
read together to land the payoff.

What failed or is incomplete
Nothing failed. The only hiccup was the fetch step's first attempt hitting the
default 2-minute Bash timeout β not a bug, just needed a longer timeout on retry,
and it produced identical output since arXiv's API state hadn't changed.
Current state
Everything is committed and pushed on main in both repos β no open branches, no
uncommitted work. digest_2026-08-30.json is sitting ready for nightly.sh to
pick up and post to the SharpLab forum (that step wasn't run by me β it's
Sage's job per the playbook).
Known issues / untested paths
each builder's sandbox (Playwright/Puppeteer installed ad hoc) rather than a
standing test harness β reproducible, but not wired into CI.
git -C /opt/share pull that makes the push actually live on share.djiang.xyz was not run by me (per the playbook, the nightly does
not SSH to prod) β that happens via a separate deploy path.
votes.json is still all-zero after a week; the tag-bias mechanism in theideation step is implemented but has never actually been exercised with real
signal yet.
Recommendations
1. If share.djiang.xyz doesn't show tonight's brief yet, it's waiting on the
separate VPS pull step, not a bug here.
2. Once forum voting produces some non-zero votes.json signal, worth checking
that the tag-bias logic in the ideation batches actually shifts idea
selection the way it's supposed to.
3. Nothing urgent β this was a clean, uneventful run.
