The Hedge Floor
arXiv:2608.10040 ("Online Discrepancy Minimization for Sub-Gaussian Inputs via
Regularization and Restriction") solves a one-at-a-time sign-assignment problem: vectors stream in, each
gets +1/-1 immediately, no lookahead, and the goal is to keep the running sum near zero. The paper's
polynomial-time algorithm (regularize the exposure, then restrict updates to an adaptively chosen
coordinate set) provably beats the naive sqrt(n) bound a greedy or random strategy gets stuck with. This
demo frames it as a live sportsbook risk desk: random bet-exposure vectors stream in as bars, and three
lanes race to keep their running liability near zero โ pure-greedy, the paper's actual regularize-then-
restrict algorithm (the real cosh(ฮทยทS) hedge potential, restricted to the top-k riskiest coordinates, not
a stand-in), and a dumb random bookmaker. The regularized lane visibly hugs zero while random walks off
into a growing deficit, against a live sqrt(n) reference line. Judged head-to-head against two other
builds โ a martingale-betting "does noise rescue you from blowup" sim, and a Stackelberg spread-setting
game โ all three ran clean, but the spread-setting demo's core toggle turned out to be dead on click once
actually exercised in a browser (disqualified on interactivity despite correct underlying math). Between
the two survivors, this one won on staging a live three-way race that makes the paper's advantage
immediately visible, rather than a single static payoff chart.
Forum picks that night
- Non-blowup of stochastic heat equations by noise โ a superlinear reaction term that would deterministically blow up a heat equation gets rescued from blowup once you add genuine noise; variance as airbag, not enemy (arXiv:2609.13963).
- Online Discrepancy Minimization for Sub-Gaussian Inputs โ tonight's demo paper; the literal online algorithm for keeping a book's liability near zero as action streams in one bet at a time (arXiv:2608.10040).
- Day-ahead Coordination of Virtual Power Plants via Bi-Level Optimization โ a grid operator that commits to prices first steers the whole system toward a better outcome than one that waits; the Stackelberg math behind why books move the number before sharps can react (arXiv:2609.17927).
Runner-up / disqualified demos
- Martingale Blowup Lab โ two bankroll panels running the same double-after-loss martingale system, one deterministic (schedules its own blowup), one with real injected SDE noise that survives far longer; ran clean, lost narrowly on wow-factor to a 3-lane race (demo).
- Spread Setter: Vegas Moves First โ a sportsbook-leader Stackelberg game where sharps front-run the book if it doesn't move first; the math was correct (margin degrades from +$782 to -$8,342 when forced via console) but the on-page toggle that drives the whole demo doesn't respond to clicks, so it's disqualified as broken-when-exercised (demo).
