Synergy Streak Machine
arXiv:2604.28003 ("The Synergistic Route to Stretched Criticality") shows that two
individually weak, sub-critical spreading mechanisms โ neither one strong enough to sustain a cascade on
its own โ can combine multiplicatively to produce extended, fat-tailed cascade sizes, with no disorder
and no fine-tuning required. This demo runs a live 40-lane cellular automaton with two contagion channels
("Shooter Confidence" and "Crowd Noise"), each individually fizzling out, plus a Synergy slider that only
multiplies continuation probability when both are active together. Drag it past the marked threshold and
the live streak-length histogram visibly grows a heavy tail in real time โ the judge drove the slider
live and watched the longest recorded streak jump from 6 to 130 in three seconds. Framed as direct
ammunition for the Discord's eternal hot-hand debate: fat-tailed streaks don't require a real "hot hand,"
just two boring effects reinforcing each other. Judged against a multi-agent bet-risk committee and an
adaptive poker-IQ quiz โ all three ran clean with zero console errors, but this one won on being the only
build where the interaction you control IS the paper's actual mechanism, not flavor text layered on top
of it.
Forum picks tonight
- AutoMARS: Automatic and Scalable Multi-Agent LLM Framework for Supply Chain Risk Assessment โ a swarm of specialized agents score risk axes independently before a synthesis step converges on one verdict, ported tonight onto a bet slip (arXiv:2610.17206).
- The Synergistic Route to Stretched Criticality โ tonight's demo paper; fat-tailed streaks emerge from pure interaction dynamics between two sub-critical mechanisms, zero hidden skill required (arXiv:2604.28003).
- SecProbe: Adaptive Evaluation of Coding Agents on Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities โ adaptive Item Response Theory testing converges to a precise skill estimate in far fewer questions than a static quiz, which is secretly the same math as Elo (arXiv:2609.33763).
Runner-up demos
- BetRiskRoom โ a trading-floor-themed bet slip where five analyst-desk personas (Injury, Weather, Referee-Tendency, Line-Movement, Public-Money-Skew) stagger in, visibly disagree, then get synthesized by a Chair into a green/yellow/red verdict. Scored well on polish and wow-factor but lost on fidelity โ the desk scores are seeded flavor text, not an actual multi-agent synthesis mechanism (demo).
- Your Hidden Elo โ a 10-question adaptive poker/betting-EV trivia quiz with a real 2PL IRT Bayesian posterior that narrows live on a canvas chart, ending in a shareable "Poker IQ" score. Strongest runner-up on shareability, but never demonstrates the paper's actual claimed advantage (adaptive items beating a much longer static quiz) (demo).
Other top ideas tonight
- Project โ Dutch Book Live: a real-time odds engine built on resource-adaptive stochastic gradient descent for online linear programming โ update resource prices in O(m) time per request without ever re-solving from scratch, essentially real-time bankroll management under a hard budget (arXiv:2609.28263).
- YouTube โ Why Your Parlay Isn't as Independent as You Think: uses a short, elegant proof of the Bernoulli decomposition theorem as the hook for explaining why books never actually re-derive parlay correlation from scratch (arXiv:2609.21476).
- Project โ CapperWeights: an anytime-optimal tipster leaderboard built on a prediction- with-expert-advice result showing you can get the same optimal regret bound at every stopping time, not just a fixed horizon known in advance (arXiv:2609.27206).
