Hot Hand Machine

Streaks with zero skill. Every shot below comes from the same fixed make-probability β€” nothing about the shooter's skill ever changes. The only thing changing is how correlated the noise is with its own past.

Mechanism grounded in arXiv:2609.28371 β€” "Memory-Conditioned Diffusion Model for Generalized Langevin Dynamics". The paper generalizes Langevin dynamics by giving the noise term a tunable memory kernel, so each fluctuation is correlated with its own past instead of white noise. Here, a latent "form" variable Xt follows an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process with a memory decay time Ο„ (Markov-embedded exponential kernel: Xt+1 = e-1/τ·Xt + noise). A shot is a make whenever Xt crosses a fixed threshold. Ο„=0 β†’ white noise β†’ i.i.d. coin flips. Ο„ large β†’ long correlated excursions β†’ streaks, purely from kernel memory.

Streak-Length Distribution β€” longest run of makes per 100-shot game

Purple = 400 simulated games at the current memory setting (Monte Carlo). Gray outline = the exact theoretical distribution for truly independent shots at the same 45% make rate (computed via exact dynamic programming, n=100). At Ο„=0 the two overlap almost perfectly. Crank Ο„ up and the purple mass drags right β€” longer streaks become common with no change in shooting skill.
