Inspired by "Directing large language models to follow the letter or spirit of the law" (arXiv:2609.23083 ). The paper's core finding: whether a model favors the letter or the spirit of a rule is a controllable dial inside the model — a low-dimensional, targeted adaptation reliably flips its rulings across diverse scenarios — not a fixed personality trait. Letter-bot and Spirit-bot here are a playful dramatization of that dial; the "actual ruling" for each scenario is an illustrative , invented-but-plausible outcome, not a verified real-world citation.
