🧬 Sperm Derby

A silly-but-real parimutuel race powered by stochastic swimmer physics.
Grounded in "Oscillatory Active Brownian Motion: A Minimal Model for Sperm Dynamics" (arXiv:2607.12158). The paper extends standard Active Brownian Motion — a self-propelled particle whose heading diffuses like a random walk, θ̇ = √(2Dr)·ξ(t) — by layering a periodic flagellar wiggle ψ(t) = A·sin(2πft + φ) on top, so the actual swimming direction is θ(t) + ψ(t). The paper shows this wiggle measurably reduces the swimmer's long-run effective forward speed, by an amount set by the amplitude and frequency of the beat relative to the angular noise Dr. Every racer below is a real per-frame Euler–Maruyama integration of that exact equation — nothing here is a canned animation.

Shared angular noise

0.20
Higher Dr = heading decorrelates faster (more random-walk-like, less ballistic). Shared by every lane, same as in the paper's model.

Payout is classic parimutuel: all stakes on the winner split the whole pool (crowd + you), proportional to stake. Everyone else's stake is forfeit.

Signal vs. noise — win rates

Run only a handful of heats and the empirical bars will bounce around wildly — that's noise, not a broken edge. Fast-forward hundreds of heats and they should converge toward the theoretical bars, which are themselves a Monte-Carlo estimate (watch them stabilize too, as you raise the trial count).
