Blackout Cascade: The Investment Threshold
A 60-node, 109-line meshed grid modeled loosely on the European transmission backbone. Click any
line to trip it and watch a real Motter-Lai-style load-redistribution cascade ripple outward — healthy →
overloaded → tripped — with live connected-component detection splitting the map into drifting islands when the
grid fractures. Two sliders control the story: decarbonization (lower system inertia, longer transmission
distances, tighter capacity margins) and redundant-line investment (extra capacity headroom). Click the
exact same trigger line at high decarbonization with zero investment and 105 of 109 lines go down into 57
stranded islands; replay the identical click with investment maxed out and it's contained to a single line. That
contrast — same click, night-and-day outcome, purely a function of one slider — is the paper's headline finding
reproduced as something you feel instead of read: cascading-failure risk rises with the renewable transition,
but it's cheaply mitigable. Grounded in arXiv:2603.24529, "Cascading Failures and Critical Infrastructures
in Future Renewable European Power Systems." Won a 3-way build-off (scored 9.5/9/9/10 on wow/interactivity/
polish/fidelity) — the judge called it the tightest possible interactive proof of a paper's actual quantitative
claim, beating out a live-quantized neural classifier and a random-walk social-network illusion.
Projects
- GWAS-Forensics: a GRIM test for genomics — reverse-engineers the integer genotype×phenotype contingency table implied by a GWAS's reported summary stats (odds ratio, p-value, minor allele frequency, N); if no integer solution exists, the reported numbers are internally inconsistent — a rounding artifact or worse. The same trick that caught fabricated psychology papers via the GRIM test, aimed at genomics summary stats (arXiv:2411.11169).
Startups
- Regime-Aware Line Fusion: a CLV Edge Detector — detects "calm vs. chaotic" market regimes the way the paper detects Bitcoin volatility/sentiment regimes, then switches which signal a line-movement tracker trusts: market-consensus odds drift in quiet regimes, social/news velocity as an early mover during news shocks (injury reports, lineup leaks). Pitched as a regime-aware CLV early-warning feed for sharp bettors (arXiv:2607.23370).

- I Simulated Europe's Next Blackout — built around tonight's winning demo. Hook: "what happens if you unplug one power line in 2035's all-renewable Europe?" Walks through why lower grid inertia and longer transmission distances make cascades worse, triggers a continent-splitting cascade live on camera, then shows the identical click failing to cascade once redundant lines are added — landing on the paper's real finding that the risk is genuine but cheap to fix (arXiv:2603.24529).
Runner-up demos
- Quantize the Boundary — trains a tiny neural classifier live in the browser, then drags a bit-depth slider from 32 bits down to 1 while a decision-boundary canvas redraws in real time: accuracy survives brutal quantization far longer than the boundary geometry does, matching the paper's finding that a model can look fine on accuracy while its decision surface has already been scrambled underneath (arXiv:2607.01478).
- Association Without Interaction — independent random walkers with zero coupling on a lattice spontaneously generate a rich "social network" — clusters, hubs, apparent cliques — purely from coincidental site overlap, plus an inset showing how a genuine 3-way co-visit gets flattened into a misleading 3-edge "clique" by naive pairwise projection (arXiv:2511.11130).
