DLA Grower โ watch the fractal amplitude lock to the dimension
Diffusion-limited aggregation is the classic lightning/coral/frost growth pattern: random
walkers launched from a circle stick the instant they touch a growing cluster. This demo runs a real DLA
simulation live in canvas and overlays two numbers it computes on the fly โ the cluster's box-counted
fractal dimension D, and a harmonic-measure proxy Dโ built from the walker-hit density around
the boundary. arXiv:2607.02216 ("Exact amplitude relations for diffusion-limited aggregation") proves
these two quantities are exactly, universally linked via the Hastings-Levitov formulation โ not just loosely
correlated as previously known โ and the demo's hook is watching the gap between them visibly collapse
toward zero as the cluster grows from 100 to 50,000 particles, tracking toward the literature value
Dโ1.71. Circular and cylindrical/periodic boundary modes are both toggleable, plus click-to-seed, sticking
probability, and speed controls. Won a 3-way build-off โ the judge picked it because, unlike the other two
demos, it doesn't approximate the paper's claim with a hand-tuned formula: it actually computes the paper's
headline quantities from a genuine running random walk and shows the convergence happen in real time.
Runner-up demos
- Memory Playground โ self-propelled disks in a viscoelastic medium, each carrying a leaky-integrator memory kernel that delays their drag force. Drag the memory-timescale slider and watch the population go from normal clumping (short memory) to a scattered, slow-nucleating haze (memory โ persistence time โ the paper's surprising headline regime) back to big clumps (long memory), driven by an actual quorum-sensing repulsion sim rather than canned states. Grounded in arXiv:2605.29162 ("Passive memory reshapes active persistence").
- Variance Is a Loan โ a Kelly-criterion-flavored bridge from population biology: the paper shows growth rate is the dominant eigenvalue of a variance-structured linear model, and that variance in division rates hurts growth in good environments but rescues it in stressed ones. Three synced panels (growth-rate curve, pulsing cell colony, GBM bankroll sim) share one formula, with a draggable marker on the curve and a "jump to crossover" button that lands exactly where growth flips sign. Built from arXiv:2511.01905.
