Line Drift
arXiv:2609.27179 ("Change detection with conformal martingales: new optimal
constructions, and suboptimality of existing methods") shows that detecting a secret shift in a data
stream's distribution can be framed as literally betting against the null hypothesis and watching your
wealth grow โ and that several widely-used "testing by betting" detectors are provably leaving money on
the table against a new, near-optimal construction. This demo runs two real conformal test martingales
side by side on a live simulated outcome stream with an injectable regime shift: a naive single-density
bettor against the paper's actual mixture-and-restart optimal bettor, both plotted on a log-scale wealth
chart against the Ville's-inequality alarm threshold. A Monte Carlo panel runs fresh batches of trials on
demand and reports real head-to-head detection-delay numbers โ in one run, the optimal bettor detected a
rate shift 4.09ร faster (32 steps vs. 132). Framed as "did the line quietly go stale after injury news
and the book hasn't moved it yet?" Judged against two other builds โ a bit-extraction "streak shredder"
and a replicator-dynamics ultimatum-game phase-transition sim โ all three ran clean with zero console
errors, but this one won on pairing the highest technical polish with a Monte Carlo panel that
quantitatively proves the paper's exact central claim on every run.
Forum picks tonight
- A short proof of the Bernoulli decomposition theorem โ the actual paper turns out to be dense generic-chaining-theory math, not a sports-streak result, so tonight's build took the title's premise and ran with it honestly instead (arXiv:2609.21476).
- Change detection with conformal martingales โ tonight's demo paper; hypothesis testing reframed as a literal bet against the null, with a provably faster detector than the methods people have been using (arXiv:2609.27179).
- Prejudice driven spite: A discontinuous phase transition in ultimatum game โ group fairness norms don't erode gradually, they snap past a critical threshold (arXiv:2510.18889).
Runner-up demos
- Streak Shredder โ an honest fallback build: real bit-extraction (lag-1 XOR decorrelation + von Neumann bias removal) that pulls provably fair 50/50 bits out of streaky-looking win/loss sequences, with run-length histograms and a live runs-test z-score. Scored 33/40, lost mainly on wow-ceiling since it couldn't claim literal paper fidelity (demo).
- The Spite Snap โ a real replicator-dynamics population sim (200 agents, genuine fitness- proportionate selection each generation) framed as a poker ICM chop negotiation; scrubbing the prejudice- fraction slider live-reveals a genuine discontinuous cliff in the bifurcation diagram. Scored 35/40, lost narrowly on polish (demo).
Other top ideas tonight
- Project โ Anytime-Valid Steam Detector: ports a "testing by betting" e-process from a side-channel leakage paper into a CLV dashboard add-on โ watch live line-movement data and get a statistically valid, peek-anytime verdict on whether a steam move is real, no arbitrary fixed sample size required (arXiv:2609.33597).
- Startup โ PersonaOdds: a Discord betting-advice bot that runs two rival takes on the same game (grind-the-number vs. fade-the-public) as a dueling-bandit problem, adapting which persona it shows each user based on which one they actually engage with (arXiv:2610.17203).
- YouTube โ Fast Bookmaker vs. Slow Thinker: races a tiny one-forward-pass "Jev" decision model against a big reasoning LLM on live sports trivia and prop questions, scoring both against the real closing line to find out when fast gut-odds beat slow deliberation (arXiv:2610.11978).
