NSBA · CATEGORY KINGS
All-Time Category Kings
The greatest specialist in each of the six subjects across NSBA history — one crown per subject, and the ghost who owns the record book.
Great question. Annoying question. Here's the honest problem: NSBA's rich subject data — who buzzed on what, question by question — only exists for the current season (NSBA4). Buzz logs, per-subject "gets," in-season ability models: all NSBA4. Go back to NSBA1, 2, or 3 and the per-buzz subject detail thins out to almost nothing.
But there is one thread that runs through every season: the combine. Before each season, players get a preseason ability score per subject (an IRT "theta" — higher is stronger). It's a projection, not a box score, but it's the only apples-to-apples subject signal we have across all four seasons. So that's the deal here: I'll crown a current king from real NSBA4 buzzing, and a historical great from the all-time combine record. When they're the same person, easy. When they differ, I'll tell you which signal I'm leaning on — and hedge accordingly.
The six crowns
| Subject | Current king (NSBA4) | The evidence | Historical combine great |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biology | Angelina Y | 13 gets · θ 2.92 | Aditya Sivakumar n1 |
| Chemistry | Akhil Batchu | 14 gets · θ 3.85 | Yufei n2 |
| Comp Sci | dannyridel | 9 gets · θ 2.01* | Sanjay / Dan n2 |
| Earth & Space | snapninja | 14 gets · θ 3.81† | Rohit n2 |
| Math | Edward | 11 gets · θ 2.58 | Sanjay / Andrey n2 |
| Physics | Lucas W | 12 gets · θ 2.78 | Sanjay n2 |
Gets = correct buzzes this season. θ = in-season ability. n1/n2 = which past season the combine great topped. *CS in-season leader is Daniel Lu; dannyridel led buzzing. †E&S in-season ability leader is Rahib H (θ 3.81); snapninja led buzzing.
The current-season kings are real, and loud
Start with what we actually know. Here's the top in-season ability score in each subject this year — the model's answer to "who is the single best buzzer in this category, right now."
NSBA4 in-season ability leader, by subject (θ)
Akhil Batchu in chemistry is the tallest bar in the building: a 3.85 in-season theta and a subject-leading 14 correct chem buzzes. He is not sharing that crown with anyone this season. Nobody's close.
Angelina Y is the cleanest king on the board — she leads biology in both the buzz count (13 gets) and the ability model (θ 2.92, best in the subject). When the counting stat and the fancy stat point at the same person, that's a king, full stop.
Lucas W owns physics the same way: 12 physics gets, top physics theta (2.78). Edward (Edward C) leads math with 11 gets and a 2.58 — the reigning quant.
Two subjects split their crown this year. In Earth & Space, snapninja racked up the most buzzes (14, tied for the season's busiest category king), but the ability model is smitten with Rahib H (θ 3.81, the second-highest subject theta of anyone this year behind only Akhil). Volume king vs. efficiency king. And in Computer Science — the thinnest subject on the board — dannyridel led with just 9 gets while the in-season model preferred Daniel Lu (θ 2.01). CS is where nobody dominated; the "king" is really just first among a quiet field.
The ghost in the record book: Sanjay
Now the history. Scroll the all-time combine table and one name keeps appearing at the top of the hardest subjects — a single NSBA2 (2023) player listed only as Sanjay.
All-time combine · preseason ability (θ), single-season
Sanjay's NSBA2 combine line was historic: an overall theta of 4.33 — more than double the top score of any other season (NSBA1's best was 1.60; NSBA4's is 2.10). His per-subject spread: #1 all-time in CS (2.60) and Physics (2.82), top-5 in Math (2.46), Chemistry (2.33) and Biology (2.41). One player, five categories, no peer.
So if the question is "who was the best across all seasons," the combine record has an uncomfortable answer for the current stars: a one-season phantom named Sanjay projected as the strongest player, in almost every subject, that NSBA has ever combined. He owns the historical crown outright in Computer Science and Physics, and shares the Math throne with Andrey (2.46 apiece).
The catch — and it's a real one — is that this is a preseason projection, and Sanjay's actual in-season box score barely survives in the reconciled records. The best match we have (career line "sanj") is one season, 8 games, 24.5 ppg, 62 gets — elite rate, tiny sample. Dazzling, but eight games is eight games. Treat the Sanjay legend as "the combine adored him" rather than "he proved it over a career."
So who actually wears each crown?
Here's my honest verdict, subject by subject, blending the loud current data with the thin historical signal:
- Chemistry → Akhil Batchu. His NSBA4 in-season theta (3.85) clears the best preseason chem projection in league history (Yufei, 3.48 in NSBA2). Different models, same direction: current-season Akhil is the pick.
- Biology → Angelina Y. Best combine bio marks belong to NSBA1's Aditya Sivakumar (2.59), but Angelina is doing it live, on the board, leading the subject two ways at once. Current king, and I'm comfortable calling her the standard.
- Earth & Space → snapninja / Rahib H (co-kings). Buzz volume says snapninja, ability says Rahib H. The historical great is NSBA2's Rohit (combine 3.06). I'm not breaking this tie — take the volume king or the efficiency king to taste.
- Physics → Lucas W, with an asterisk named Sanjay. Lucas rules the current season cleanly. But Sanjay's 2.82 physics projection is the single best in the all-time combine. Present tense: Lucas. All-time on paper: Sanjay.
- Math → Edward C. Current king by buzzes and in-season theta; the historical combine throne is Sanjay/Andrey (2.46). Edward's the safe present-day answer.
- Computer Science → Sanjay (historical), Daniel Lu / dannyridel (current). This is the one subject where I lean historical: NSBA4's CS field is thin (9-get "king"), while Sanjay's 2.60 combine is the best CS projection on record. If any subject has an all-time king who isn't playing today, it's this one.
Bottom line: the six current crowns are earned and visible — Akhil, Angelina, Lucas, Edward, snapninja/Rahib, and the quiet CS field. The all-time record book, thin as it is, keeps whispering one name across the hard sciences. If Sanjay ever comes back and buzzes like his combine says he can, half this list changes hands.
How I did this / caveats
Current-season kings come from NSBA4 data: category_kings (top correct buzzer per subject) and ratings (in-season per-subject IRT ability, theta). Historical greats come from combine, the preseason per-subject ability score that exists for all four seasons. Key limitation: rich per-buzz subject detail only exists for the current season — there is no NSBA1–3 equivalent of "gets by subject," so every historical claim here rests on combine projections, not proven box scores. Hedge them accordingly.
The two theta numbers are also different estimators (combine = preseason, ratings = in-season), so cross-season theta comparisons are directional, not exact. Small samples abound: current NSBA4 leaders sit on ~4–6 games; Sanjay's historical case rests on one combine and a partially-reconciled ~8-game career line. Handles are shown as recorded; real names used where the name map had one (e.g. Akhil = Akhil Batchu). NSBA4 is a partial, in-progress season. No writes were made to the database.
