NSBA Β· GREATEST OF ALL TIME

The Golden Age of NSBA

Four seasons, four all-NSBA teams. Once you adjust for pace, the strongest top-5 talent the league ever fielded doesn't belong to the season you'd guess.

ASK BOT DEEP DIVE2026-07-29NSBA 1–4
"Take the top 5 players in each season of NSBA (1, 2, 3, 4) and explain which season had the best all-NSBA team β€” normalized per game." β€” asked tonight, to the stats bot

Great question, and a trap. The obvious move is to line up the top scorers from each season and crown whoever put up the biggest raw point totals. Don't. Raw points lie across eras, because NSBA seasons don't have the same length or the same scoring environment. A 15-game grinder will out-total a 7-game phenom who was, per game, twice as good.

So we do it right. Aggregate every player's box scores within a season, take points per game (ppg), require a real sample (5+ games for the finished seasons), and take the top 5 by ppg in each of NSBA 1–4. Then we average that five-man crew. That's the all-NSBA team, era by era.

The headline number: top-5 average ppg

Here's each season's five-man all-NSBA team, averaged. Nothing fancy yet β€” just points per game.

Top-5 all-NSBA team Β· average points per game

NSBA1 Β· 2022 19.84 NSBA2 Β· 2023 23.42 NSBA3 Β· 2025 17.28 NSBA4 Β· 2026* 17.87 0 *partial season β€” 6 games in

NSBA2 (2023) runs away with it. Its all-NSBA five averaged 23.42 ppg β€” a clear 3.6-point cushion over NSBA1's 19.84, and a comfortable 5.5+ over both NSBA3 and the in-progress NSBA4. If the question is "which season's top 5 scored the most per game," it isn't close.

And it's carried by the single best individual line in league history: yufei at 28.0 ppg across 7 games. Behind him, thedoge at 24.0. Two players clearing 24 a game on the same season's leaderboard is something no other era can match.

But raw ppg still isn't fair β€” pace matters

Here's the wrinkle a sharp reader (or a sharp 15-year-old) will spot: not every season was played in the same scoring environment. Pull the average team score per game out of the schedule and the eras split into two worlds:

SeasonAvg team score / gameLeague-avg scorer (ppg)
NSBA1 Β· 202268.56.47
NSBA2 Β· 202367.28.80
NSBA3 Β· 202577.97.05
NSBA4 Β· 2026*80.0β€”

NSBA 3 and 4 are high-scoring eras β€” roughly 78–80 points a game per team, versus the ~67–68 of the early years. More points on the table means a given ppg is worth less. Scoring 22 a game when teams hang 78 is not the same feat as scoring 22 when teams hang 67.

So normalize again: express each top-5 crew's ppg as a share of an average team's per-game output. This is the true era-adjustment β€” how big a slice of the offense the all-NSBA player commanded.

Era-adjusted Β· top-5 ppg as % of avg team score/game

NSBA1 Β· 2022 29.0% NSBA2 Β· 2023 34.8% NSBA3 Β· 2025 22.2% NSBA4 Β· 2026* 22.3% 0

The pace adjustment doesn't dethrone the champ β€” it widens the lead. NSBA2's top 5 accounted for 34.8% of an average team's scoring per game, nearly six points clear of NSBA1 and a full twelve clear of the modern high-scoring seasons. NSBA3 and NSBA4 collapse into a near-tie in the low-22s once you tax them for their inflated pace.

The verdict

NSBA2 (2023) fielded the greatest all-NSBA team in league history, by both raw ppg (23.42) and pace-adjusted share (34.8%). NSBA1 (2022) is the runner-up on both boards. The modern seasons score more points but spread them thinner β€” their stars are good, not historically dominant.

Where the metrics disagree: dominance over your peers

One measure flips the podium, and it's worth airing. Instead of asking "how many points," ask "how far above a normal contributor" β€” divide the top-5 average by that season's league-average scorer:

SeasonTop-5 avg ppgLeague-avg scorerMultiple
NSBA1 Β· 202219.846.473.07Γ—
NSBA2 Β· 202323.428.802.66Γ—
NSBA3 Β· 202517.287.052.45Γ—

By this "above replacement" read, NSBA1's top 5 stood the furthest above their peers β€” 3.07Γ— the league-average scorer, versus NSBA2's 2.66Γ—. The reason is telling: NSBA2 had deeper scoring (an average scorer put up 8.8 ppg, the highest of any season), so even a monster top 5 didn't tower as far over the field. NSBA1's average was a thin 6.47 β€” its five stars were islands in a sparse ocean.

So pick your definition. If "best all-NSBA team" means raw talent at the top, it's NSBA2, decisively. If it means separation from the rest of the league, NSBA1's five were the most singular. NSBA2 wins two of the three framings and I'd give it the belt β€” but the disagreement is real, and it's the honest answer.

5Sohil Rathi79613.7117.6%

A few things jump out. Kian D's 22.67 ppg leads NSBA4 and would slot second on the all-time individual board β€” the current season has a genuine star, even if the supporting cast around him can't lift the crew's average into contention. And NSBA3 is the flattest era: only one player (Atlasguy101) cleared 20, and the No. 5 slot dips to 13.71. It's the one season without a second elite scorer to pair with its ace.

Small-sample warning

The very top lines lean on short samples. yufei's league-best 28.0 came in just 7 games; thedoge's 24.0 likewise. NSBA1's arolakiv posted 25.09 over a much sturdier 11 games β€” arguably the most durable elite season on record. Treat the 7-game marvels as spikes, not full-season resumΓ©s.

So when was the Golden Age?

2023. NSBA2. The highest top-5 scoring average, the highest pace-adjusted share, the best single individual season, and the only all-NSBA team with two 24-ppg players. Every framing that rewards top-end talent points the same way. NSBA1 is the honorable runner-up β€” and if your definition of greatness is standing alone above your league, its five have a real case. The modern seasons? More points, more offense, thinner stars. Good hoops. Not the golden age.

How I did this / caveats

Per-game lines for NSBA 1–3 were aggregated from history_player_games (season, player β†’ games, points, ppg); NSBA4 totals come from the current-season players table. Real names via player_names. "Top 5" = highest ppg with a 5+ game minimum for the finished seasons (this filters out 1–4 game cameos like a 20.0-ppg-on-one-game blip in NSBA3). Pace = average team score per game from the schedule tables; "share" = a player's ppg Γ· that pace. "League-avg scorer" = total points Γ· total player-games across all rostered scorers that season.

Caveats. NSBA 1–3 per-player box scores are reconciled from older, imperfect records β€” read the historical ppg as strong estimates, not gospel. NSBA4 is an in-progress partial season (6 games played), so its top-5 average is a partial-season figure and will move; its ppg is computed against team games played (per-player game logs don't yet exist for the current season), which can nudge a player's rate if they missed a game. All the small-sample notes above stand. Numbers current as of 2026-07-29.
