NSBA ยท The What-If Desk
What If NSBA4 Were 2-Player Teams?
Same snake draft, same order โ but the whistle blows after round two. Every GM keeps their first two picks and nothing else. Who wins the two-man league?
Great question, because it turns a 62-pick draft into a scalpel. In a real snake draft your first two picks are the ones you actually agonize over โ round one is your franchise player, round two is where you either steal or where you blink. Strip everything after pick 28 and you're left with each GM's two best swings. Nowhere to hide a bad second pick behind a deep bench.
So here's the exercise: keep the real NSBA4 draft order, keep the snake, and cut every roster to its first two selections. Fourteen GMs, fourteen two-man duos. Then rank them by their combined NSBA4 output so far. Every number below is real โ pulled straight from the draft board and this season's box scores.
The standings, if the season had two-man teams
Combined points scored this season, top ten duos:
Combined NSBA4 points ยท first-two-picks duos (top 10)
Your two-man champion: Cryofornia Gurls
WINNER No single superstar, no dead weight โ just the most points any duo has actually put on the board: 124. GM cryo opened with Suzuko O (52 points, five games) and then landed the steal that decided this whole exercise: Edward C at pick 25, who has quietly poured in 72 points for a value score of 1.86. That's not a round-two flier; that's a co-ace. Their combined value score of 3.10 leads the field, and it's the only top-three duo where both halves are genuinely pulling.
The Gurls win because their two picks are the closest to equal at a high level. Everyone above them in raw talent has a passenger. They don't.
The carry job: Ponnor St. Germain
Second place, 120 points โ but read the split. Kian Dhawan, taken third overall, is the single best player in this whole two-man universe: 92 points, a 23.0 ppg, value score 2.28. He is doing 77% of the lifting on his own. Round-two partner Rahib H chipped in 28.
That 92-to-28 gap is a 64-point drop-off from first pick to second โ tied for the largest on the board. Ponnor finishes second anyway, which tells you exactly how good Kian is: an elite franchise pick can drag a mediocre second selection to a silver medal. But it's a warning too. In a two-man league, one is a very lonely number.
The whiff that cost a title: Gid
Draft malpractice
Gid held the #1 overall pick and used it well โ Harry G, 60 points. Then, at pick 30, they took Monish S: 4 points on five games, a 0.8 ppg. That's a 56-point cliff, and it dropped a top-tier first pick all the way to 8th. The best opening selection in the league, wasted on the second turn.
Gid isn't alone. Seanjay ran the same play in miniature โ Sean F (56 points) hitched to Sanjay Oruganti (4 points), a 52-point drop that stranded them in 10th. And CZZ matched Ponnor's 64-point cliff exactly, pairing Vishnu M's 80 points with Anish A's 16. The theme of the two-man format: your round-two pick is no longer depth. It's half your team.
The sleeper: Mingworms
SLEEPER Seventh by raw points (84) โ but first in the entire field by combined points per game: 32.7. Theenash Sengupta (14.0 ppg) and second-rounder Roshan Annamalai (18.7 ppg, value score 1.29) are the most efficient duo alive; they just haven't logged the games. Roshan has played three, Theenash two.
Caveat, loudly: that ppg edge is built on tiny samples, and small samples lie. But if these two played a full slate at their current rate, the Gurls' points lead evaporates. Mingworms is the duo you draft if you believe the early buzzes are real.
The basement: Jonathan
Someone has to finish 14th, and it's not close. Jonathan reached at pick 4 for Edwin He (12 points, 3.0 ppg, value score โ0.14 โ a โ21 steal score, i.e. the biggest first-round overdraft), then compounded it at pick 23 with Kensuke Ohshima, who is one of the only players in the league sitting on negative points (โ4). Combined haul: 8 points. In a two-man season, that's a team you could quietly leave off the schedule.
Every two-man team

| 10 | Seanjay โ Sean F (#5) + Sanjay Oruganti (#20) | 60 | 15.0 | โ0.07 |
| 11 | Fez_Keyreb โ Advik Sharma (#12) + Aldric B (#18) | 56 | 28.0 | 0.77 |
| 12 | Hellcats โ Ishaan Kabra (#14) + Eric L (#16) | 44 | 14.7 | 0.57 |

| 14 | Jonathan โ Edwin He (#4) + Kensuke Ohshima (#23) | 8 | 2.0 | โ1.04 |
The lesson of the two-man league is brutal and simple: the format punishes the whiff and rewards balance. Ponnor has the best player and finished second. Gid had the first pick and finished eighth. And the champion is the one GM who found a second ace hiding at pick 25.
How I did this / caveats
The draft here is the real NSBA4 snake draft. Each two-man "team" is simply that GM's first two picks in draft order โ which, under a snake, is their round-one and round-two selection. Fourteen GMs with drafted rosters; seven free-agent-pool names with no team assigned were excluded. Duos are ranked by combined NSBA4 points scored this season (from the draft board's season totals), with combined points-per-game and value score as secondary lenses.
This is a hypothetical reshuffle, not a real result โ nobody actually played a two-man season. And NSBA4 is in progress: these are partial-season numbers (most players have four or five games; some duos, like Mingworms, are on two or three). Per-game rates on small samples are noisy โ treat the ppg column as a hint, not a verdict. Value score is the draft board's own points-above-expectation grade at time of writing.
