The Worst Team in NSBA History

Four seasons of scorelines, one question: who was the biggest disaster the league ever produced? We went digging. It gets ugly.

ASK BOT DEEP DIVE2026-07-29NSBA1 โ€“ NSBA4
"What was the worst team ever in NSBA history?" โ€” submitted to the stats bot tonight, rated 8/10

Champions get banners. This is not that story. Tonight someone asked the bot to name the single most catastrophic team across all four NSBA seasons, and the answer deserved more than a one-liner. So we pulled every regular-season scoreline on record โ€” three completed seasons plus the current one โ€” and went hunting for the bottom.

The problem with "worst" is that it has three flavors. There's win percentage (did you ever win?), point differential per game (how badly did you lose?), and blowouts (how often did it turn into a war crime?). A team can be bad at one and merely mediocre at the others. The true champion of losers has to be bad at all three. One team was.

The winner is nobody: usmic, NSBA3

In NSBA3, a team playing under the handle usmic went 0โ€“5 in the regular season, then lost its lone playoff game to boneca 124โ€“34 to finish a spotless 0โ€“6. Winless is bad. The margins are what make it historic.

usmic was outscored 144 to 568 across five regular-season games โ€” a point differential of โˆ’84.8 per game, the worst full-slate margin any team has ever posted in the reconciled records. For context, no other team in league history has a regular-season margin worse than โˆ’49.

The single most cursed box score in NSBA history

Round 2, NSBA3: usmic โˆ’12, dha wei 148. That is not a typo. usmic finished a full game of quiz bowl in negative points โ€” the only sub-zero final score on record โ€” meaning they buzzed in, got questions wrong, and gave points back faster than they earned them. A 160-point margin, the second-widest defeat ever recorded.

Their season, in full: โˆ’12 vs. dha wei, 46 vs. limitless (lost), 22 vs. 2y4b (lost by 112), 22 vs. big shot (lost), 66 vs. fishnoobs (lost). Five games, five losses, two of them 100+ point blowouts, and one in which the scoreboard went backwards. There is no honest way to rank anything else first.

The asterisk: usmic played only five regular-season games. NSBA3's schedule is the messiest in the archive โ€” team game counts range from 5 to 7 and the reconciled data even shows near-duplicate handles (2yellow4brown / 2y4b, nolikeblue / no like blue). A five-game sample can flatter or damn a team. But โˆ’84.8 a night with a negative-score game isn't a sample-size fluke; it's a team that never once looked competitive.

The honorable mentions

usmic wins on peak awfulness, but a couple of teams have a real case if you value endurance โ€” staying bad over a longer schedule, where you can't hide behind five games.

Ben, NSBA2 โ€” the marathon of misery

If usmic is the sprinter of failure, Ben is the marathoner. In NSBA2 the Ben squad went 1โ€“8 over nine games at โˆ’38.2 per game (418 for, 762 against) โ€” the most sustained futility in a fuller schedule anywhere in the archive. The lone win is the best kind of consolation prize: an 86โ€“82 squeaker over Yared in Round 6, decided by a single tossup. Take that one buzz away and Ben is the winless team we're all talking about instead.

NSBA1's basement twins โ€” ct610 & nearest airport

NSBA1 was more competitive at the bottom: no team finished worse than 3โ€“8. But ct610 and nearest airport tied for the league's most regular-season losses with eight apiece. ct610 gets the nod for ugliest of the two at โˆ’16.2 a game. Respectable margins, historically bad records โ€” the difference between "bad team" and "usmic."

NSBA4 (in progress) โ€” Jonathan, provisionally

The current season is only six games deep per team, so nothing here is final. As of tonight the West's Jonathan sits 1โ€“5 at โˆ’32.7 per game (356 for, 552 against) โ€” the worst active mark in the league. There's plenty of runway to climb out, and a โˆ’32.7 clip is nowhere near usmic territory. But if the current form holds, Jonathan is the name to watch for this list next year.

The all-time basement, ranked

The worst regular-season team from each completed season, plus the current NSBA4 cellar-dweller for context. Sorted by point differential per game โ€” the stat that best separates "unlucky" from "unwatchable."

* NSBA4 is in progress; Jonathan's line is provisional. con1596 and ct610 are NSBA1's worst by differential and by record respectively โ€” NSBA1 had no winless teams.

The verdict

Every metric points the same direction. Worst win percentage: usmic (.000). Worst differential: usmic (โˆ’84.8). Only negative-score game in league history: usmic (โˆ’12). Biggest single-game hole among perennial cellar teams: usmic, twice over. Ben deserves a long, respectful nod for staying that bad across nine games, and NSBA1's basement was genuinely competitive by comparison. But there's a floor to how bad quiz bowl can get, and in Round 2 of NSBA3, usmic found it โ€” then dug.

How I did this / caveats

Records were reconstructed from history_games (NSBA1โ€“3) and standings (NSBA4), counting regular-season games only (is_playoff = False) and summing points for/against from each team's side of every scoreline. "Diff/G" is (points for โˆ’ points against) รท games; "100+ L" counts losses by 100 or more. The differential chart is filtered to teams with at least four games to keep tiny samples from dominating.

Historical NSBA1โ€“3 data is reconciled from older, imperfect records โ€” treat exact totals as close-but-not-gospel. NSBA3's schedule in particular is uneven (5โ€“7 games per team) and shows a few near-duplicate handles, so its bottom of the table is noisier than the others. NSBA4 is a partial, in-progress season; its "worst" line can and probably will change. One scoreline was excluded from the blowout discussion as a likely forfeit (a 178โ€“0 result). Teams are shown under the handles stored in the archive.
