Week 3: The Contenders Crack

The line of the season, in both directions. Kian D went 11-for-11 for 44 points with zero negs — the best single game anyone has had — and he didn't do it in a vacuum: Connor swept Earth/Space 4–0 (against an expectation of just 2.0 there) and took Bio, Chem and Physics 3–1. As a team Connor bought 16 tossups against an xGets of 9.9, a +6.1 overperformance that is the largest of the week and removes any doubt this was a fluke of scheduling.

(Stitch)² was the mirror image — a total-system failure. They managed just 4 gets on a lineup worth ~8 (−4.2), then negged ten times for a −40 self-inflicted tax that turned a bad night into a historic one: final score −14. pancreas uvula alone had 5 of the ten. When you give back forty points on interrupts, the category battle is almost beside the point.

The West statement of the week, and the xGets says it was fully deserved: cryo bought 12 vs 9.1 expected (+2.9) while czz cratered to 6 vs 9.0 (−3.0) — a six-buzz swing that is the whole 60-point margin. The engine room was Chemistry, where cryo went 4–0 against a 1.8 expectation (+2.2), the single most dominant category performance of the round.

cryo also owned the clock, buzzing at an average of word 20 to czz's 34 — they were getting there a full beat earlier on nearly everything. czz never found a second scorer behind vishnu m (4 gets); the supporting cast produced just 20 team buzz points. A title contender looked ordinary, and the model agrees it wasn't bad luck.

The upset of the week is really an availability story. ChessFun's Eric L — its fastest, most productive buzzer — took zero buzzes, and the top-heavy attack never recovered. Even with the bar already lowered by his absence, ChessFun still came in below par (8 vs 8.9, −0.9) — there was no next man up.

jonathan pounced, and it wasn't a smash-and-grab: they overperformed at 10 vs 8.6 (+1.4), powered by a Chemistry 3–1 edge (3 vs 1.5 expected) and a Physics 2–0 sweep. The wart is discipline — seven negs — which is the only reason this was 18 and not 30. Clean that up and the Week-2 giant-killer is a genuine problem; a 60% bonus night to ChessFun's 38% shows the pieces are there.

sumin's unbeaten aura ended hard, and xGets says it was more anurag rising than sumin collapsing — anurag overperformed (11 vs 9.0, +2.0) while sumin came in modestly under (7 vs 8.8, −1.8). The decisive zone was Chemistry: anurag went 4–0 against a 1.6 expectation (+2.4), the biggest single-subject overperformance of the game.

sumin's one bright spot was a Physics sweep (3–0, +1.8 over expected), but they were blanked in Earth/Space (0 vs 1.6) and never threatened anurag's coverage everywhere else. Sanjay O (4 gets, quick at word 19) ran the anurag show. After an 0–2 start built on fixable back-end mistakes, anurag turned the corner and took the East's last unbeaten down with it.

The most interesting xGets line of the week: both teams overperformed. Gid landed right on its number on buzzes (10 vs 9.6) and won on the bonus line instead — an elite 80% conversion (8/10) — plus Chemistry and Physics 3–1 edges. This was a win built on cashing what they earned, not on extra volume.

The story underneath is xpoes: 9 gets against a 7.8 expectation (+1.2) while a man short (no Rohan G, again). Jianyu was the game's second-best player (5 gets) and they swept Bio 3–0 (+2.1 over expected) — a genuinely strong showing from a thin lineup. Whole, this xpoes team beats its number by more and maybe wins; short, it ran out of coverage in Math (0 vs 1.3) and couldn't match Gid's back end.

The cleanest "conversion isn't everything" game of the season. Fez_Keyreb cashed 71% of bonuses to dan's 42% — and lost by 36, because dan simply won far more tossups: 12 vs 9.6 expected (+2.4) to Fez's par-ish 7 vs 7.7 (−0.7). You can't convert bonuses you never earn.

dan did it with sweeps — Computer Science 3–0 and Earth/Space 4–0 (+2.3 over expected there) — and, crucially, a clean sheet on negs (0) while Fez gave four back. varnite (5 gets) paced a balanced attack with no single weak zone. dan.k.memes is a spotless 3–0, and the coverage model calls it the most consistent team in the league — it beats its number every week without ever looking spectacular.

The East's unbeaten meets its scariest ceiling. dan.k.memes (3–0) wins the quiet way — volume, sweeps, no negs, +2.4 xGets — while mingle/Yunyi, back from a bye, owns the league's single-game high (130) and a fixed bonus stroke. dan's relentless coverage against mingle's top-end firepower; win it and you're the clear class of the conference.

ChessFun's ceiling rides on availability. With Eric L back this is a top-two West team; without him, jonathan just published the blueprint and the xGets (−0.9 even at a lowered bar) says there's no next man up. A rested, balanced James W is exactly the kind of side that punishes a short-handed favorite.

Two redemption spots. The hottest team in the league, cryo, visits (Stitch)² — can a −4.2, ten-neg team stabilize in a week? And czz, freshly humbled by 60 and 3 buzzes below its floor, draws the giant-killer jonathan — a nasty landing spot to prove the blowout was a blip, not a level-set.
