Matchweek 4: The Thrashing Week

The result of the season. mingle/Yunyi, fresh off no fixture, were unplayable — 15 chances against an xG of 8.5 (+6.5), the biggest overperformance of the year, headlined by a counter 4–0 and clean sweeps in the box, midfield and on the wings. roshan (2G+0A) and theenash s (1G+0A) ran a balanced rout.

But 5–0 is a two-sided story, and dan.k.memes' half is historic in the wrong way. A side that came in unbeaten was shut out in the box, midfield AND on the counter, managed 5 goals of output on a 9.3-chance lineup (−4.3), buried 1 of 5 clear chances and gave the ball away seven times. Whatever this was — availability, a bad night, both — it wasn't the side that led the East a week ago. The coverage model calls it the single worst performance it has logged.

Fez_Keyreb's breakout, and the xG says the four-goal margin was earned twice over. Fez generated 13 chances against a 7.9 expectation (+5.1), swept the box 3–0, and — after weeks of good finishing on thin volume — finally paired it with a 77% clinical night (10/13). Advik S (2G+0A) and Chris W (1G+0A) led a deep, disciplined attack.

The alarming half is Gid. This was not an availability excuse — Harry G played (a team-high 1G+1A) — and they still cratered to 7 vs 9.7 (−2.7) with six giveaways and a range zone that mustered one goal against a 1.9 expectation. A full-strength preseason contender getting run by four is the most concerning single result of the season for a side that isn't short-handed. The talent is there; the possession discipline is not.

The preseason favourite looked the part at last. James W overperformed at 13 vs 9.0 (+4.0), powered by a midfield 4–0 and a counter 3–0 that together were the whole game. akhil (2G+0A) paced it, with Sohil (1G+0A) and a lightning-fast Kavin Anreddy (touch word 12) behind him. That's a three-goal statement and a jump to 2–1.

ChessFun's availability watch got its answer — Eric L is back — but the ceiling didn't come with him: he managed just 2 goal contributions, the side came in below par (8 vs 9.1, −1.1), and a 25% clinical night (2/8) left no margin. They were shut out in midfield (0 vs 1.8) and on the counter (0 vs 1.0), the exact zones James W swept. Getting the star back isn't the same as getting the whole rotation back.

Seven days after a −14, (Stitch)² won a nail-biter — and the xG says the bounce-back was real: 12 chances against an 8.8 expectation (+3.2), built on a midfield 4–0 and a box 3–1. Praneel A was the engine (2G+0A), though the old wart lingered — six giveaways nearly gave it all back and kept a comfortable win to one goal.

cryo will rue this one: it landed right on its number (9 vs 9.3, −0.3) and swept set-pieces 4–0, but got shut out in both midfield and on the wings (blank against ~1.6 each) — the zones Stitch owned. Edward was magnificent (a week-high 2G+1A), but no second scorer emerged and a 44% clinical night couldn't cover four giveaways. The hottest side in the West stubbed its toe on a club it should have beaten.

The availability story of the season, told in numbers. xpoes named just two rostered players — Rohan G and Daniel Y — and yet the xG, which already bakes in the short bench, says they beat their number (8 vs 7.7, +0.3). Rohan G was heroic: 7 goal contributions (2G+1A), plus set-piece (3–0) and wings (2–1) sweeps, carrying a lineup that had no business staying within two goals.

sumin did exactly what a whole squad should against a skeleton crew: 11 vs 9.5 (+1.5), with box and range 3-goal sweeps and a steady 55% clinical night. Lucas (2G+0A) matched Rohan blow-for-blow on the other side. There's no shame in this loss for xpoes — the shame is a squad this good keeps taking the pitch half-empty. Whole, they're a top-four side; short, they're 1–3.

czz keep winning the quiet way. No zone blowout, no single hero — just a par-plus 10 vs 9.8 (+0.2) and a deeper rotation: vishnu m (1G+1A), anish a (1G+0A) and Charles (0G+1A) all chipped in, and a 60% clinical night stretched the margin to one. That's a 3–1 record and a share of the West lead built on breadth.

jonathan actually cleared its number (9 vs 8.0, +1.0) and out-gunned czz on the counter (3–1), so this wasn't a no-show — it was the back end. Three giveaways and a cold set-piece zone (blank) were the whole difference, and edwin h (1G+1A) had no consistent partner. The giant-killer has real coverage every week; it just keeps leaking goals at the margins.

The West's two best, and a share of first on the line. czz (3–1) win on depth, zero giveaways and a deep rotation; James W (2–1) just unleashed the preseason A+ — midfield/counter sweeps, +4.0 — in a four-goal statement. czz's breadth against James W's freshly-clicked ceiling; the winner is the clear class of the conference at the midpoint.

The worst possible landing spot for a reeling favourite. mingle/Yunyi just posted the year's best coverage line (+6.5) in a 5–0 rout; Gid were run by four while full-strength (−2.7, six giveaways). If Gid can't tidy up possession here, the 2–2 start becomes a genuine crisis — and mingle stake an early claim to the East's No. 1 seed.

Two East swing games. Fez bring a +5.1 breakout into a sumin side that just carved up a short squad — a real test of whether Fez's finishing-plus-volume version is here to stay. And xpoes host anurag with the season's biggest question mark attached: get a real squad around Rohan G and this is a winnable game; turn up two-deep again and it won't matter.
