Week 5: The Model Gets Cooked

The score that cooked the books. cryo was untouchable — 15 buckets against an xFGM of 8.5 (+6.5), the biggest overperformance of the week, headlined by a Deep 3–0 sweep and a Mid-range 2–0. suzuko led the way (he had 5 buckets, 16 points), and cryo never let the game breathe. This is the clear No. 1 seed in the West staking its claim.

The other half is the story of the model's season. The books favored Connor Chang by 2.5 — and Connor lost by 44. On a short lineup they made 6 buckets against a 10.0 expectation (−4.0) and converted 1 of 6 from the line (17%), dannyridel (3 buckets) the only pulse. The model priced Kian D's ceiling; availability priced reality. It's the worst line of the year — a −2.5 favorite run by 44.

The game that mattered, and the one that made mingle/Yunyi the East's No. 1 seed. mingle/Yunyi won at 38% from the line — and it didn't matter, because they put up 13 buckets against an 8.0 expectation (+5.0) with zero turnovers and a Paint 4–0 sweep of Gid. roshan was the engine (5 buckets, 20 points, fastest trigger of any top scorer) in the cleanest line of the week.

GidTheKid2 was full-ish strength and favored — and lost the game anyway. Their Deep 3–0 couldn't offset that Paint sweep, Monish S (3 buckets) had no answer, and a 60% night from the line was cold comfort. Par volume (10 vs 9.6, +0.4) with no closing kick: talent, but a favorite that dropped a division game it should have had.

A 34-point statement from the West's other riser. James W overperformed at 15 vs 10.0 (+5.0), powered by a Transition 4–0 whitewash that was the whole game. akhil paced it with a week-high 8 buckets (20 points) — volume with a cost, three turnovers of his own — but the ceiling is real, and it's the scariest in the conference.

czz co-leads the West on record and got blasted anyway. They shot 67% from the line and it meant nothing — just 6 buckets against an 8.8 expectation (−2.8) and six turnovers, with Achuth (2 buckets) unable to get anything going. That's the efficiency-is-noise lesson in one line: a great percentage on tiny volume is how you lose by 34.

The closest game of the week, and a coin flip until the end. sumin landed right on its number (10 vs 9.7, +0.3) but won it at the stripe — a 70% night from the line and a Corner 3–1 edge were the whole two-point margin. Lucas W (5 buckets, 16 points) steadied a favorite that never covered but got the W. Most complete team in the East, even in a grind.

Fez_Keyreb lost the game and won the week. They beat their number (10 vs 8.4, +1.6) with the cleanest buzzing on the floor (just one turnover), and Advik S broke out for 4 buckets (16 points). A 1–3 team that loses by 2 and clears its xFGM is a team whose arrow is pointing up hard.

The lowest-scoring game of the week, and it came down to who kept the ball. Both teams put up the same number of buckets — 9 apiece — and both actually finished slightly OVER xFGM. (Stitch)² came in at 9 vs 8.4 (+0.6); it won not by outscoring jonathan but by not giving it away, pancreas uvula (4 buckets, 16 points) the top line on either side.

jonathan matched Stitch bucket-for-bucket (9–9) and at the line (56%–56%) and even beat its own number (9 vs 8.9, +0.1) — but it coughed it up six times to Stitch's two, and that six-to-two turnover gap was the whole margin. edwin h and kensuke o split what little scoring there was. Even possessions, even shooting, lost on giveaways: the West cellar's night in one stat.

The "Sanjay game" finally got played, and it cost the books their second favorite. xpoes did it the mingle way — won at 38% from the line but on 13 buckets against an 8.6 expectation (+4.4), sweeping the Mid-range 3–0 and taking Transition 3–1. Rohan G's ghost-roster act — a team-high 6 buckets — finally landed on the winning side of a game.

anurag was favored and lost outright. The Seanjay squad came in under its number (8 vs 9.2, −1.2), Sean (4 buckets) the only steady hand, and a 50% night from the line never covered a spread it never led. A −3.9 chalk beaten by 18 is a 22-point swing against the number — the East's donation to the model's worst week.

The top of the West on a collision course. cryo just posted a +6.5, 44-point demolition and looks like the conference's class; James W answered with a +5.0, Transition-4–0 statement of its own. Two teams that both smashed their number in the same week — put them on the same floor and the winner is the outright West No. 1 at the midpoint. It's the game the schedule owes us.

mingle/Yunyi is the East's new No. 1 having won at 38% from the line on pure volume (+5.0, zero turnovers) — and xpoes just beat a favorite the exact same way (13 buckets at 38%). That's a sustainable engine if the buckets keep coming and a house of cards if the volume dips. The next test is whether the tempo — roshan setting a shot-clock-16 pace — survives a team that can match their buzzing.
