A5 — Discord Qualitative Intel (NSBA4 Draft)
A5 — Discord Qualitative Intel (NSBA4 Draft)
Analyst role: GM-side qualitative scout.
Source: 20 plaintext Discord channel exports in data/raw/discord/ (NSBA4 server), spanning 5/23/2026 – 5/30/2026 (the combine/pre-draft window).
Goal: Mine soft signals (returning status, grade/age, availability, study habits, subject strengths, friend networks, sentiment, and tanking) to supplement the gameable combine score and thin availability data.
How to read this: Claims are tagged [EXPLICIT] (stated in chat) or [INFER] (my reading). Each cites a channel and approximate context. Handles are Discord usernames; display/real names are resolved from greetings and @-mentions where possible and flagged as tentative with "(?)". I have not fabricated — where a signal is absent I say so.
0. Critical framing: the combine is not just "gameable," it is actively being gamed
This is the single most important takeaway for the GM, because it changes how to weight every combine number you have.
-
Prebuzzing / guessing MCQs is +EV and everyone knows it. Multiple players openly discuss that once the reader says "multiple choice," guessing is positive expected value, and that on hard (q3/q4 "superpower") MCQs you should prebuzz. [EXPLICIT — questions, combine-discuss] -
meduh.: "It's +EV to guess on super power mcq";suminyy: "isnt it positive EV if u guess on an mcq after hearing 'multiple choice'";aaronjudgeisgoat: "do i prebuzz all mcqs that are q3 or q4";saahil920_: "you shld js guess on all mcqs that you dont main." Even staff (jhuang25) acknowledge MCQ guessing "adds noise to combine." - Implication: Combine totals are inflated for strategic guessers and deflated for honest players who skip what they don't know (e.g.,deasert_willowlamented "whyd i guess on mcq i didnt know"). A low combine ≠ low ability. -
"Biking" is the in-community euphemism for cheating/sandbagging. Sarcastically defined as "playing completely fairly." [EXPLICIT — off-topic, 5/27–5/28] The running "WADF" (World Anti-Doping Federation) roleplay led by
abat48/deasert_willowis bandied about constantly; most of it is a joke, but it signals a culture that is very aware of how to manipulate the combine. -
One confirmed real cheating incident (see Tanking/Integrity Watch). Note it inflated a score rather than sandbagging it.
Bottom line for modeling: Treat combine as a noisy ceiling, not a floor. Cross-reference every number against the chat-derived ability signals below.
1. Data reliability (read before trusting anything here)
- High-signal channels:
general(30.9k lines),combine-discuss(14.4k),questions,off-topic,welcome,request-combine, and thestaff-generalchannel (which contains candid reader assessments not visible to players). - Volume ≠ ability, but it is a real engagement/availability proxy. Top posters:
deasert_willow(1062),n_1har(864),grb5128(714),solvior(704),abat48(620),a.new.rag(594),pine2359(514),.sequels(501),varnite(425),aryanb(407),r67jriutiscool(404). - Major limitation: This is teenage/college quizbowl banter — heavy irony, in-jokes, fake "doping reports," and deliberate misdirection about combine scores. Self-reported scores ("im gonna get a 2," "might be time to pack it up") are frequently self-deprecating performance art, not reliable. I have leaned on third-party and staff statements over self-reports.
- Name resolution is partial. Many real names come from @-mentions of server nicknames (e.g.
@metavaria,@deazhuang,@mareena) and greeting context. Treat all "(?)" names as tentative. - Window is short (~1 week) and pre-draft, so availability signals are about summer plans, not in-season reliability.
2. Returning vs. new
Confirmed returning veterans [EXPLICIT unless noted]:
- xpoes (our GM) — "Vishnu was on my team in nsba2," ex-Prometheus paid staff. College grad.
- draoethar (Edwin) — returning star; "got better after college," repeatedly called "the goat"/"anomaly." (questions, 5/25)
- abat48 (Akhil Batchu) — "l2 max last season," "peaked over last year summer," was a captain last year. (questions)
- solvior — played Spring 2020 SB tournaments, "came back from volunteering"; reflective old-timer. (general)
- varnite — "i was last year... last last year." (questions)
- dannyridel44 — solvior: "bro wtf u played nsba against me?" (general)
- nocombomomento — "drafted last year and I did cheeks," "got 5 last year." (questions/general)
- oof7373 — "nsba1 was summer before 9th for me," "my goat since nsba1." Long tenure, now college-bound. (general)
- so.what.if. — "i was a freshman then and i am graduating now" → 4-season veteran, now graduating. (general)
- pine2359 — greeted as a veteran by Bennett/thecryolite. (welcome)
- Staff/organizer veterans (likely not normal draftees): a.new.rag (Anurag, ~3 yrs into college), jhuang25 (Jonathan), auride0 (Mingle), isobowldev (Naveen, 23, isobowl.com dev), eagle_student (MIT scibowl), thecryolite (Peter "Cryo" Bennett, Prometheus founder — adult).
Likely new / low-prior-context [INFER from "what even is combine?"-type questions]: chessisfunforme, redst.ne ("what does biking mean"), agamotto9015 ("how does it work"), yanus_19724, mopg24_52987, airman24 ("lowk how does nsba work").
3. Grade / age / development-curve priors
- College / post-grad (older, likely past peak or ineligible-tier):
draoethar/Edwin (college),isobowldev/Naveen (23, perdeasert_willow),a.new.rag(~3 yrs college),sanj0606("just graduated... starting a masters"),modernnewton("1 year of college and I know nothing except bio anymore"),.jiggle._./Jake (lin-alg final),c0nn0r70/Connor Chang (euro final),thecryolite(adult),eagle_student(MIT). Development note: Edwin is the cautionary tale that college students can improve ("why did edwin get better at scibowl after college"); butsolvior/modernnewtonshow the more common pattern of college rust ("peak sophomore year," "I know nothing except bio anymore"). - HS seniors (graduating, possible final season):
so.what.if.("graduating now"),extouchtriangle("i'm a senior"),xpoes-era references. - Younger HS (upside/development targets):
grb5128self-states "17";yanus_19724"15/16";nimit_agrawal_17406and the Deeprun cohort jabbed as "10 yr olds tryna act 14" (grb5128) — i.e. a young school..sequels"learned about ts in 8th grade."deasert_willow"took SAT in 7th grade" (precocious). - No clean grade for most mid-tier players — they simply don't state it. Marked
HS/ unknown in the CSV.
4. Availability concerns (the section you most need)
Availability data is thin and mostly about summer travel. Concrete flags:
shamp0— HARD CONFLICT [EXPLICIT]. "I'm not gonna be on discord from 5/31–6/13" (camp). Offered to "still help write after." Conscientious but a 2-week blackout right in the draft/early window. (questions, 5/25)i.cansleep(Rehan) — TIMEZONE + TRAVEL [EXPLICIT]. In India (Bangalore), IST; "in India for the next 2 weeks"; could only commit to combining "June 10." Practices/plays at odd US hours. (questions, 5/26)theshubaminator_40097— TIMEZONE + TRAVEL [EXPLICIT]. In India (Hyderabad → Bangalore), IST. Casual engagement. (questions)suminyy— SUMMER TRAVEL [EXPLICIT]. "I dont wanna captain bc im traveling over summer." Declined leadership for availability reasons. (general)alkalint— RECURRING CONFLICTS [INFER]. "I have somth at 8 for an hour," "ill just do it during bowl practice";.jiggle._.: "ts guy always has something." Pattern of being double-booked. (request-combine, 5/29–30)- College finals crunch [EXPLICIT]:
c0nn0r70declined to combine ("gotta lock in for my euro project that turned into a final");.jiggle._."failed the lin alg final";eagle_student/a.new.rag"busy and tired" reading combines. Several college players are mid-finals during this window — a temporary availability dip, but worth noting for early-draft outreach. isaacnewtonfanboy6.67: "our finals are in june" [EXPLICIT] — still in school through June.- Nocturnal/late-night players [INFER]:
grb5128("the sun is set when praneel awakes"), the whole core combines past midnight ET. Late-night-skewed availability, relevant if your matches are scheduled earlier.
No availability data at all for the large mid/long tail (most sticker-only "Joined the server" users in welcome). Absence of a flag here means no signal, not available.
5. Study / engagement & subject strengths (CS emphasized — scarce category)
CS-specific (the scarce category) — thin but notable:
- nocombomomento — "CS is one of my best subjects" and "cs is unbikable" (i.e. you can't cheat CS, so a real CS score is trustworthy). [EXPLICIT] Best concrete CS-strength self-report in the corpus; corroborates returning-player status. Worth targeting.
- eagle_student — writes the math + CS combine questions for staff; MIT scibowl. Elite CS knowledge but staff-tier eligibility. [EXPLICIT, staff-general]
- deasert_willow — self-IDs "bio cs main." [EXPLICIT] But his combine is artificially low (he honestly skips), so his CS won't show on the sheet — a classic undervalued-CS target.
- marmoris_ — groans "COMPUTER SCIENCE 😭" → likely a CS weakness. [INFER]
- Otherwise CS is barely discussed, consistent with it being scarce. No other player claims CS strength. This is a real gap the GM can exploit: chat confirms few people are comfortable in CS.
Other subject signals:
- Bio mains/leaners: solvior, grb5128 ("i am bio main"), metavarias (combine made him look bio with a 6, insists he's not), modernnewton (bio-only post-college), nocombomomento (bio is his weak spot), Aryan Bora ("truly a bio main"), Lucas/Roshan (referenced).
- Physics: uscgak ("physics is my best category"), draoethar/Edwin, grb5128 ("physics is so much fun"), aaronjudgeisgoat (became "phys main" after negging chem), monoionic calls Akhil "physics main." isobowldev: physics "SUPER washed" (weakness).
- Chem: a.new.rag ("chem main"/generalist), abat48 (crams chem), Edwin biked chem4. shamp0 weak at chem ("passed almost every non-chem mcq").
- ESS / geology: n_1har ("earthandspace main"), r67jriutiscool ("canonical ESS+math+phys main"), monoionic ("best geology main in town"), kingrel124 (strong ess), Altair Maine (referenced ess main).
- Math: metavarias ("hella good at math" per .sequels), Uddip K (math main), Nihar Bhave (math main); kingrel124/hellcat4024 both "threw math"; grb5128 "math main cant do arithmetic" (self-mock).
Study/practice engagement (HIGH): n_1har, .sequels, r67jriutiscool, extouchtriangle all reference reading Campbell's (the bio bible). deasert_willow wrote ~300 CLASH questions during ISEF (extreme engagement). abat48 "time to cram." Active isobowl.com scrimming by the core group (general/General channels).
Study engagement (LOW/unknown): the late-joining sticker-only cohort, plus self-described "washed"/"fried" players — but caveat that "washed/fried" is often ironic.
6. Friend network (chemistry & draft-behavior signals)
Derived from @-mentions, "hi X" greetings (esp. welcome), and "I want to be on your team" statements. Edges are tentative.
- WWPS cluster:
89.8farmers(Sanjay O?) ↔crow0748(Abhi) ↔abat48↔grb5128. Explicit: "entirety of wwps joining," "i hope we're on same team," "like the vb tournament." Strong real-life chemistry; expect them to lobby to be drafted together. - WADF roleplay officer clique (the social core / likely captains):
abat48(VP),deasert_willow(Treasurer),draoethar/Edwin,a.new.rag(the "most wanted"), Varyan Jain,3neks/Kensuke. These are the high-status, high-volume veterans — they will heavily influence draft narratives and probably become captains. abat48↔hellcat4024: Akhil vouches — "my friend HellCat would like to combine." Likely a target pairing..jiggle._.(Jake) ↔c0nn0r70(Connor Chang): college friends; Jake recruits Connor to combine..jiggle._.also wranglesalkalint/sucralose__/nathaniel.i.cansleep(Rehan) ↔draoethar/Edwin: "if I bag and u be cap can u js draft me" — explicit pre-arranged draft desire. [EXPLICIT]santhosh_b.↔i.cansleep: both India-connected, banter together.- Heavy social hubs (greet everyone, glue the server):
n_1har,.sequels,katzhww,deasert_willow,grb5128,marmoris_. These are the chemistry multipliers — valuable as locker-room presence even if mid-tier on paper. - Stated "I want to be drafted" (eager, low leverage):
metavarias("bro ur legit gonna get picked earlier than me," worries he's "an unknown"),.orca.whale.("anyone tryna draft me"),grb5128("can someone draft me pls"),so.what.if.("i lowkey want to be drafted"). These players will likely accept value picks without fuss.
7. Tanking / integrity watch
Important nuance: the combine has TWO failure modes — sandbagging down (to lower draft expectations / land on a strong team) and cheating up (biking to inflate a score). Both corrupt the number.
santhosh_b.— CONFIRMED BIKING (cheating UP), staff-witnessed. [EXPLICIT, staff-general 5/25 10:24pm]. Readerauride0(Mingle): "strong suspicions of biking... didn't interrupt a single time and always buzzed w like 2 sec left... buzzed every single multiple choice... on the last ess question I heard a female voice say 'subtropical' and he immediately buzzed subtropical."jhuang25: "straight up leaked last bio answer in chat," and after deletion "sent it again." Also faked "ohhhh ACE I can't believe I missed ACE" theatrics and claimed "his phone turned off." → His ~15 combine total is untrustworthy and likely inflated. Tanking_risk in the CSV is marked low (he's not sandbagging) but treat the score itself as HIGH-unreliability. Do not draft on his combine.deasert_willow(Ziang) — APPARENT SANDBAG (down), unconfirmed. [EXPLICIT report]. Posted a 7 total with "might be time to pack it up."uscgak: "yo he's genuinely sandbagging bro wtf";sid_s8: "Ziang biking betting," "you're getting drafted 1st." Ziang protested he "got negative math and ess." Given he's a high-status returning staffer/officer who honestly skips MCQs, this is plausibly a real strong player with an artificially low combine — whether by deliberate sandbag or by honest non-guessing, the effect is the same: he's underpriced.pine2359flatly: "dea is a tank." High-value buy-low candidate.- General sandbag chatter [EXPLICIT but mostly banter]:
metavarias: "who's throwing their score to get on a strong team";nocombomomento: "y'all just wanna get picked by the sigmas." This confirms the incentive to sandbag exists and is openly discussed, even if most instances are jokes. - No other player shows a credible, specific tanking signal.
nimit_agrawal_17406predicts a low score and guesses MCQs after-the-fact (called out byaaronjudgeisgoat) — that reads as genuine low ability + rules confusion, not strategic tanking (marked med only for score-unreliability).
8. Sentiment / personality quick-tags
- Leaders / high-status:
abat48(organizer, WADF VP),deasert_willow(officer, prolific writer),draoethar/Edwin (revered),a.new.rag(head reader),n_1har(social glue). - Coachable / conscientious:
shamp0(proactively flags absence, offers to write),santhosh_b.(extremely polite/formal — ironic given the biking),travis_842(polite),saahil920_. - Self-deprecating but engaged (don't over-discount):
metavarias,nocombomomento,grb5128,.sequels,aaronjudgeisgoat. - Lurkers / low-signal: the bulk of welcome "Joined the server" + sticker-only accounts.
- No clearly toxic actors surfaced; tone is competitive-friendly. The only integrity issue is
santhosh_b.'s cheating, and even that was treated with amusement.
9. Actionable shortlist for the GM
- Buy-low on artificially-deflated combines:
deasert_willow(Ziang, bio/cs, sandbag/honest-skip), and any honest non-guesser. The combine under-prices players who refuse to guess MCQs. - Discount
santhosh_b.'s combine entirely — confirmed biked. - CS scarcity play:
nocombomomento(real, "unbikable" CS strength) anddeasert_willow(cs main) are the rare credible CS signals among draftable players. - Availability red flags to verify before spending a pick:
shamp0(5/31–6/13 blackout),i.cansleep/theshubaminator(India/IST),suminyy(summer travel), college finals cohort (temporary). - Chemistry packages likely to lobby together: WWPS cluster (
89.8farmers/crow0748/abat48/grb5128); Edwin↔Rehan pre-arrangement. - Expect these to become captains (they shape the board): the WADF officer clique — Edwin, Akhil, Ziang, Anurag.
