A5 — Discord Qualitative Intel (NSBA4 Draft)

Analyst role: GM-side qualitative scout. Source: 20 plaintext Discord channel exports in data/raw/discord/ (NSBA4 server), spanning 5/23/2026 – 5/30/2026 (the combine/pre-draft window). Goal: Mine soft signals (returning status, grade/age, availability, study habits, subject strengths, friend networks, sentiment, and tanking) to supplement the gameable combine score and thin availability data.

How to read this: Claims are tagged [EXPLICIT] (stated in chat) or [INFER] (my reading). Each cites a channel and approximate context. Handles are Discord usernames; display/real names are resolved from greetings and @-mentions where possible and flagged as tentative with "(?)". I have not fabricated — where a signal is absent I say so.

0. Critical framing: the combine is not just "gameable," it is actively being gamed

This is the single most important takeaway for the GM, because it changes how to weight every combine number you have.

Prebuzzing / guessing MCQs is +EV and everyone knows it. Multiple players openly discuss that once the reader says "multiple choice," guessing is positive expected value, and that on hard (q3/q4 "superpower") MCQs you should prebuzz. Bottom line for modeling: Treat combine as a noisy ceiling, not a floor. Cross-reference every number against the chat-derived ability signals below.

1. Data reliability (read before trusting anything here)

High-signal channels: general (30.9k lines), combine-discuss (14.4k), questions, off-topic, welcome, request-combine, and the staff-general channel (which contains candid reader assessments not visible to players).
Volume ≠ ability, but it is a real engagement/availability proxy. Top posters: deasert_willow (1062), n_1har (864), grb5128 (714), solvior (704), abat48 (620), a.new.rag (594), pine2359 (514), .sequels (501), varnite (425), aryanb (407), r67jriutiscool (404).
Major limitation: This is teenage/college quizbowl banter — heavy irony, in-jokes, fake "doping reports," and deliberate misdirection about combine scores. 3. Grade / age / development-curve priors

College / post-grad (older, likely past peak or ineligible-tier): draoethar/Edwin (college), isobowldev/Naveen (23, per deasert_willow), a.new.rag (~3 yrs college), sanj0606 ("just graduated... starting a masters"), modernnewton ("1 year of college and I know nothing except bio anymore"), .jiggle._./Jake (lin-alg final), c0nn0r70/Connor Chang (euro final), thecryolite (adult), eagle_student (MIT). Development note: Edwin is the cautionary tale that college students can improve ("why did edwin get better at scibowl after college"); but solvior/modernnewton show the more common pattern of college rust ("peak sophomore year," "I know nothing except bio anymore").

CS-specific (the scarce category) — thin but notable: - nocombomomento — "CS is one of my best subjects" and "cs is unbikable" (i.e. you can't cheat CS, so a real CS score is trustworthy). [EXPLICIT] Best concrete CS-strength self-report in the corpus; corroborates returning-player status. Worth targeting. - eagle_student — writes the math + CS combine questions for staff; MIT scibowl. Elite CS knowledge but staff-tier eligibility. [EXPLICIT, staff-general] - deasert_willow — self-IDs "bio cs main."
