A5 — Discord Qualitative Intel (NSBA4 Draft)

Analyst role: GM-side qualitative scout. Source: 20 plaintext Discord channel exports in data/raw/discord/ (NSBA4 server), spanning 5/23/2026 – 5/30/2026 (the combine/pre-draft window). Goal: Mine soft signals (returning status, grade/age, availability, study habits, subject strengths, friend networks, sentiment, and tanking) to supplement the gameable combine score and thin availability data.

How to read this: Claims are tagged [EXPLICIT] (stated in chat) or [INFER] (my reading). Each cites a channel and approximate context. Handles are Discord usernames; display/real names are resolved from greetings and @-mentions where possible and flagged as tentative with "(?)". I have not fabricated — where a signal is absent I say so.

0. Critical framing: the combine is not just "gameable," it is actively being gamed

This is the single most important takeaway for the GM, because it changes how to weight every combine number you have.

  1. Prebuzzing / guessing MCQs is +EV and everyone knows it. Multiple players openly discuss that once the reader says "multiple choice," guessing is positive expected value, and that on hard (q3/q4 "superpower") MCQs you should prebuzz. [EXPLICIT — questions, combine-discuss] - meduh.: "It's +EV to guess on super power mcq"; suminyy: "isnt it positive EV if u guess on an mcq after hearing 'multiple choice'"; aaronjudgeisgoat: "do i prebuzz all mcqs that are q3 or q4"; saahil920_: "you shld js guess on all mcqs that you dont main." Even staff (jhuang25) acknowledge MCQ guessing "adds noise to combine." - Implication: Combine totals are inflated for strategic guessers and deflated for honest players who skip what they don't know (e.g., deasert_willow lamented "whyd i guess on mcq i didnt know"). A low combine ≠ low ability.

  2. "Biking" is the in-community euphemism for cheating/sandbagging. Sarcastically defined as "playing completely fairly." [EXPLICIT — off-topic, 5/27–5/28] The running "WADF" (World Anti-Doping Federation) roleplay led by abat48/deasert_willow is bandied about constantly; most of it is a joke, but it signals a culture that is very aware of how to manipulate the combine.

  3. One confirmed real cheating incident (see Tanking/Integrity Watch). Note it inflated a score rather than sandbagging it.

Bottom line for modeling: Treat combine as a noisy ceiling, not a floor. Cross-reference every number against the chat-derived ability signals below.

1. Data reliability (read before trusting anything here)

2. Returning vs. new

Confirmed returning veterans [EXPLICIT unless noted]: - xpoes (our GM) — "Vishnu was on my team in nsba2," ex-Prometheus paid staff. College grad. - draoethar (Edwin) — returning star; "got better after college," repeatedly called "the goat"/"anomaly." (questions, 5/25) - abat48 (Akhil Batchu) — "l2 max last season," "peaked over last year summer," was a captain last year. (questions) - solvior — played Spring 2020 SB tournaments, "came back from volunteering"; reflective old-timer. (general) - varnite — "i was last year... last last year." (questions) - dannyridel44solvior: "bro wtf u played nsba against me?" (general) - nocombomomento — "drafted last year and I did cheeks," "got 5 last year." (questions/general) - oof7373 — "nsba1 was summer before 9th for me," "my goat since nsba1." Long tenure, now college-bound. (general) - so.what.if. — "i was a freshman then and i am graduating now" → 4-season veteran, now graduating. (general) - pine2359 — greeted as a veteran by Bennett/thecryolite. (welcome) - Staff/organizer veterans (likely not normal draftees): a.new.rag (Anurag, ~3 yrs into college), jhuang25 (Jonathan), auride0 (Mingle), isobowldev (Naveen, 23, isobowl.com dev), eagle_student (MIT scibowl), thecryolite (Peter "Cryo" Bennett, Prometheus founder — adult).

Likely new / low-prior-context [INFER from "what even is combine?"-type questions]: chessisfunforme, redst.ne ("what does biking mean"), agamotto9015 ("how does it work"), yanus_19724, mopg24_52987, airman24 ("lowk how does nsba work").

3. Grade / age / development-curve priors

4. Availability concerns (the section you most need)

Availability data is thin and mostly about summer travel. Concrete flags:

No availability data at all for the large mid/long tail (most sticker-only "Joined the server" users in welcome). Absence of a flag here means no signal, not available.

5. Study / engagement & subject strengths (CS emphasized — scarce category)

CS-specific (the scarce category) — thin but notable: - nocombomomento"CS is one of my best subjects" and "cs is unbikable" (i.e. you can't cheat CS, so a real CS score is trustworthy). [EXPLICIT] Best concrete CS-strength self-report in the corpus; corroborates returning-player status. Worth targeting. - eagle_student — writes the math + CS combine questions for staff; MIT scibowl. Elite CS knowledge but staff-tier eligibility. [EXPLICIT, staff-general] - deasert_willow — self-IDs "bio cs main." [EXPLICIT] But his combine is artificially low (he honestly skips), so his CS won't show on the sheet — a classic undervalued-CS target. - marmoris_ — groans "COMPUTER SCIENCE 😭" → likely a CS weakness. [INFER] - Otherwise CS is barely discussed, consistent with it being scarce. No other player claims CS strength. This is a real gap the GM can exploit: chat confirms few people are comfortable in CS.

Other subject signals: - Bio mains/leaners: solvior, grb5128 ("i am bio main"), metavarias (combine made him look bio with a 6, insists he's not), modernnewton (bio-only post-college), nocombomomento (bio is his weak spot), Aryan Bora ("truly a bio main"), Lucas/Roshan (referenced). - Physics: uscgak ("physics is my best category"), draoethar/Edwin, grb5128 ("physics is so much fun"), aaronjudgeisgoat (became "phys main" after negging chem), monoionic calls Akhil "physics main." isobowldev: physics "SUPER washed" (weakness). - Chem: a.new.rag ("chem main"/generalist), abat48 (crams chem), Edwin biked chem4. shamp0 weak at chem ("passed almost every non-chem mcq"). - ESS / geology: n_1har ("earthandspace main"), r67jriutiscool ("canonical ESS+math+phys main"), monoionic ("best geology main in town"), kingrel124 (strong ess), Altair Maine (referenced ess main). - Math: metavarias ("hella good at math" per .sequels), Uddip K (math main), Nihar Bhave (math main); kingrel124/hellcat4024 both "threw math"; grb5128 "math main cant do arithmetic" (self-mock).

Study/practice engagement (HIGH): n_1har, .sequels, r67jriutiscool, extouchtriangle all reference reading Campbell's (the bio bible). deasert_willow wrote ~300 CLASH questions during ISEF (extreme engagement). abat48 "time to cram." Active isobowl.com scrimming by the core group (general/General channels). Study engagement (LOW/unknown): the late-joining sticker-only cohort, plus self-described "washed"/"fried" players — but caveat that "washed/fried" is often ironic.

6. Friend network (chemistry & draft-behavior signals)

Derived from @-mentions, "hi X" greetings (esp. welcome), and "I want to be on your team" statements. Edges are tentative.

7. Tanking / integrity watch

Important nuance: the combine has TWO failure modes — sandbagging down (to lower draft expectations / land on a strong team) and cheating up (biking to inflate a score). Both corrupt the number.

8. Sentiment / personality quick-tags

9. Actionable shortlist for the GM

  1. Buy-low on artificially-deflated combines: deasert_willow (Ziang, bio/cs, sandbag/honest-skip), and any honest non-guesser. The combine under-prices players who refuse to guess MCQs.
  2. Discount santhosh_b.'s combine entirely — confirmed biked.
  3. CS scarcity play: nocombomomento (real, "unbikable" CS strength) and deasert_willow (cs main) are the rare credible CS signals among draftable players.
  4. Availability red flags to verify before spending a pick: shamp0 (5/31–6/13 blackout), i.cansleep/theshubaminator (India/IST), suminyy (summer travel), college finals cohort (temporary).
  5. Chemistry packages likely to lobby together: WWPS cluster (89.8farmers/crow0748/abat48/grb5128); Edwin↔Rehan pre-arrangement.
  6. Expect these to become captains (they shape the board): the WADF officer clique — Edwin, Akhil, Ziang, Anurag.
